Grahamâs eyes were glued to the screen, which was again showing the radar sweep of the Doctorâs monitoring system. He was listening out for any sounds of approach, or suggestion of danger. The temperature seemed to have risen, and the smell in the air was changing, becoming sourer; damage done by the Astingirâs forced entry, he guessed. Little shivers and shudders seemed to run through the floor and walls, whispers and groans sounded in the floor. Itâs your imagination, he told himself; and then told himself firmly to believe that.
âDoctor! Graham?â
The voice carried from the TARDIS.
It was Yaz.
âYaz?â Graham dithered for a moment â he was meant to watch for the red light at all costs, but now Yaz was calling in, something had happened. If he went to her, and Ryan was taken, and he wasnât there to throw the lever â¦
âCome on, Doctor.â Yaz sounded distressed, urgent. âPick up, please!â
Graham turned and charged inside the TARDIS, hit the phone link. âYaz, love, itâs me,â he blurted. âYou all right? Whatâs happening?â
âThey didnât take me!â Yaz cried. âI was covered in that slime but they still didnât take me.â
âWho?â
âThe Ratts, they attacked usââ
âYaz, are you safe?â
âIâm fine. Listen, Graham, they left me behind and took Ace!â
âAce?â Graham felt his heart plunge down to his socks. âBut sheââ
âSheâs not wearing a tag,â Yaz snapped. âI know!â
The change in the atmosphere, the noises from the flesh of the station: now Graham understood their meaning. They beamed Ace up and pushed her on, and I was as much use as a chocolate teapot.
âWhereâs the Doctor?â said Yaz. âSheâs got to be able to find Ace somehow.â
âSheâs â¦â Graham swallowed hard; there was no point scaring Yaz further. âSheâs out just now, checking something. Thereâs still Ryan, though, right, with his tag on? Wherever Ace has gone, heâll be going there, right? Stands to reason.â
âIâve just been attacked by a dozen giant rats in hairy skin hijabs, Graham, nothing stands to reason.â
âWeâll still be able to find her,â he insisted. âHave you tried calling Ryan?â
âYeah. He didnât pick up.â
Graham swore under his breath. âIâd better keep watching the controls for him, he could be buzzed up any minute, yeah? Moment the Doctorâs back here, Iâll get her to call you. Stay safe. You got a cup of tea?â
âNo.â
âDo it! Get a cuppa. Priority.â
âRight.â He could hear the smile steal reluctantly into Yazâs voice now. âTake care of each other up there.â
âAlways.â
Grahamâs heart was heavy as he turned and went back outside. The screen remained black-and-green and serene. âCome on, Ryan,â he muttered. âAnd come on, Doctor â¦â
