“This is just goddamned insane,” said Colonel Schlutz. “Sure, I have a bone to pick with that boy about what happened down the sewers. But, you know, he’s a good guy. And by that I mean he’s one of us, you know? On our side – the good guys. That idiot Thickett is backing the wrong team if you ask me. Turn off the damned TV, Sir Adrian. I can’t stomach any more of it.” Sir Adrian picked up the remote and hit the Off button.

“So why don’t you do something about it, Joe?” said Commander Bunce. “You’re the man on the ground for the United States. Surely to God you can tell the world that your country takes the contrary view?”

“He can’t,” said Sir Adrian. “He’s been well and truly compromised. With his ex-wife and son having been aliens, Joe’s under a bit of suspicion himself.”

“But they’ve tried to kill him a couple of times now.”

“Aw, that ain’t proof enough for Uncle Sam,” said Schlutz. “That’s seen as the aliens setting me up to be a credible agent. It’s doublethink. The fact that there’s no obvious motive for trying to kill me makes it even more suspicious.”

“But you can vouch for him, Sir Adrian.”

“Ha! As Thickett says: I’m yesterday’s man. On my watch it was all going wrong. When Doctor How and his assistants managed to pull a solution out of the bag I was unable to explain how the problems were solved – like a chap in an exam hitting a lucky answer but unable to show his workings. Thickett, for all his delusions, is able to show that he has some kind of consistent story about the Time Keepers.”

“But he said they were the cause of all the problems!” said Bunce.

“He said How was, mainly. A subtle change of story to say that Who is the good guy, and How the bad one, and the story fits the facts, doesn’t it? Who was already a popular fictional figure, then he apparently pitches up and becomes a real-life hero and that’s that – game over. I’m left looking like a fool. Every minister in the cabinet is trying to muscle in on this Doctor Who stuff. It’s only a matter of time before I’m put on gardening leave. Right now, it’s Camilla Peterson I feel sorry for.”

“She seemed to be handling it pretty well,” said Bunce. “You know how resilient she is. My gut feel is that Thickett, for all he threatens her, knows how valuable she is. He’d have lost command of Jock if it weren’t for her.”

“Any chance we can use her to our advantage?” asked Schlutz.

“I’m sure she’ll be working an angle,” said Sir Adrian. “We can’t put her at risk. I’m sure she’ll contact us when she can help.”

“Or, God forbid, when she needs help,” said Bunce.
