Doc knew in theory, a sugar hangover wasn’t exactly real. Three pieces of wedding cake with half a carton of mint chocolate chip ice cream chasers was probably not a good idea. Half a bottle of Stoli didn’t help either. Neither was crushing on a married man. Technically, Wendell was single, a widower, and for all intents and purposes he was available. Only she wasn’t a fool willing to chase a married man and in his mind, he was still married to Vanessa. While she could appreciate the loyalty, she really wished her heart and other various parts of her anatomy would understand.

All of this had combined, making her search out the medicine cabinet for a better cocktail than she took the night before. Little Advil, mixed with Tylenol and chased down with a gallon of water and maybe a banana or two if she could find one. The pounding in her head made the sound of her phone even worse. “This is Dr. Olson,” she said as she answered her cell .

“Dr. Olson, this is Detective Yurez,” the man on the other end of the phone stated.

“Did you find who left the note?” she asked her mind pushing away the fog to bring her back to the here and now.

“Dr. Olson, we are wondering where you are at,” he said. “Are you currently staying with friends or family?”

“Friends,” she stated remembering the night before and reminding herself, she needed to beat Red’s ass once she could stand up without light hurting her and explain the difference between helping out and being pulled into bullshit.

“Are they local?” he asked

“No, why?”

“Oh, we were hoping you could come in, I’m assuming the fire department didn’t call you.”

Fire department? Rebecca drank half a glass of water and skipped through her missed calls on her phone. “Why would the fire department call?” she questioned, the water seemingly trickling through her body and settling her stomach.

“Your house burned down last night.”

“What?” she asked. “Like down, down? Are you telling me everything I own is gone?”

“We are working in concert with the fire inspector,” Detective Yurez stated, as if that made it better. “There might be some things that could be salvaged, I’m unsure, how long would it take—”

“For me to what? Come back where there is actively someone trying to kill me. I’ll pass, can I give you some names of people that I’m fine rifling through the embers.”

“I suppose, but Dr. Olson, can you think of anyone who might be doing this?”

“I’ve given you all the names I can come up with, beyond that—” Her stomach was turning and flipping and not from the hangover.

This was full on fear meeting uncertainty and crashing into what was left of her control. She couldn’t hide in Montana forever could she? No…hiding wasn’t an option and while in theory, Red and the Steels had enough contacts she could disappear forever, she refused to abandon her mother and father over a threat. “I’ll text you the names of who I can think of from the past, as well as the people who will dig through the rubble.
