CHAPTER 10

“I am not doing that.” Tally puts her hands on her hips and glares at Kirsten. “No way.”

“It’s perfectly safe,” Kirsten tells her. “You really don’t need to worry.”

“Is she scared of heights?” asks Skye meanly, rolling her eyes at Lucy. “What a surprise.”

“I’m not scared of heights,” Tally says quietly. “I like being up high.”

Skye shrugs. “So put on the harness and climb,” she says. “We get points for every member of the team who makes it to the top, and after yesterday’s disaster we need all the points that we can get.”

“I’m ready!” yells Gregory. He runs towards the cliff wall and launches himself at the rock. “I bet that I can get to the top first!”

“Not without the right safety equipment, you can’t,” says Kirsten, nodding at the other instructor who has already introduced himself as Pete. He walks across to Gregory and attaches a rope to his harness, before handing him a helmet.

“You can’t go anywhere until I go and sort the ropes,” he tells him. “Just hold your horses.”

“It’s not perfectly safe then, is it?” mutters Tally, under her breath. “If we need safety equipment before we can do it.”

“Did you know that cats’ claws all curve downwards?” says Jade, sidling up next to her. “It makes it easier for them to climb up a tree but it means that they can’t climb down headfirst otherwise they’d slip. So they have to back down the tree trunk.”

“Yet another fascinating cat fact from Kitty!” announces Skye, doing up her helmet. “Do you have any more scintillating information for us?”

Jade nods. “Actually, I do. Did you know that cats can jump up to six times their length but humans can’t even jump double their own height?”

“That’s fascinating,” drawls Skye, smirking at Ameet. “Tell us another one.”

“Did you know that cats are crepuscular?” says Jade.

“You’re crepuscular,” says Ameet and everyone except Tally laughs.

Jade gulps slightly but she pushes on. “It means they’re most active at dawn and dusk.”

“Oh my god, how do you know so much?” says Skye, smiling sweetly at Jade. “It’s like you’re a Wiki page on cats. I could honestly stand here all day and listen to you.”

“Stop it,” says Tally, taking a step closer to Jade, but nobody hears her and she doesn’t dare to say it again. The air is charged, like there’s about to be a storm, and inside Tally’s head feels stretched and taut.

“You’re incredible.” Skye nods her head and grins at Jade. “We’re certainly all going to learn a lot you this week. About cats, anyway.”

She turns her back on Jade and starts talking to Ameet and Lucy.

“I don’t think that she—” Tally starts to say to Jade but she’s talking to thin air because Jade has dashed across to the pile of helmets and is busying herself with trying to find one that fits. Tally is just wondering whether she should go after her when Lucy spins round.

“Skye was telling us that there’s a plan to sneak out tonight and meet up with Khloe’s cabin,” she says, excitedly.
