5. Stay flexible. One or both sides may be trapped by their thinking. Come up with new options for solving the problem to get everyone out of the rut that is stalling negotiations.

6. Emphasize those areas where you agree. It could be that you have been focusing only on your disagreements, and coming up with areas of agreement may be just what is needed to move negotiations forward.

7. Clarify the guidelines you are using to evaluate the conflict. For example, if you have based the discussion solely on comments that started the conflict (“He called me a liar”), try moving on to feelings that have kept the conflict going and what can be done about them.
