At the risk of some reduction, we might say that while the psychoanalytic account of trauma posits a diagnosis and potential solution to human suffering, and while the existential philosophy of Kierkegaard posits another, The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series weaves both discourses togetherand in this weaving, it resembles more than a few great works of twentieth-century art. I do not claim that the creators of the series always did this self-consciously, but this does not make Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, John Romita, Gerry Conway, or Gil Kane naïve or unsophisticated in their approach to issues of suffering, injustice, the limits of (super) human power, and the demands of responsibility. On the contrary, these great comic book writers and artists clearly marshaled the full resources of the superhero genre in their work on Spider-Man, and extended the traditional limits of that genre as they explored their chosen themes.
