Two days later he joined up with the elven brothers, and that was how Xander found himself at a no-name bar in a no-name town, on his way to the Ring Sea. As Xander left his inner thoughts he saw that Jefon had not only introduced himself to Valihorn but had effectively cornered the man in merchant finery and was badgering him with questions.

“How did that happen? What was her name?”

Valihorn was a bit bewildered by the sudden attention, but he responded politely enough. “Austen and I do not know how Suzanne was taken, or why. She was bringing a magic item to Lord Cashmin here at Dowden. Suzanne was supposed to deliver the item, collect the payment, and return five days ago. Austen sent me to speak with Lord Cashmin to see if she ever made the drop off.”

“And had she?” Evisar asked.

“I am afraid not.” As the conversation unfolded, Valihorn felt more comfortable with the elven brothers and lowered his hood as a sign of respect. Underneath the hood was a bit of a surprise as Xander realized that Valihorn was a young half-elf just like himself.

A gasp came from behind the bar as Carl was taken aback in shock. “Gods have mercy, my place is overrun with elves.”

Jefon and Evisar accepted Valihorn’s heritage without a break in their stride. After a moment, Valihorn continued his story, leaving Xander to wonder if he had taken down his hood as a test to the newcomers. “Suzanne never made it to Dowden. No one has seen her since she left Wessex.”

Jefon looked at Valihorn with empathy and said, “That’s terrible. We should help you look for her.”

Xander rolled his eyes at Jefon’s generosity and moved quickly into the conversation. “Who is this Austen that you mentioned?”

Valihorn looked Xander up and down briefly before he said, “He is a wizard and I am his apprentice. He lives in a small tower in Wessex. He and Lazarus take care of this region as best they can.”

Xander couldn’t keep the irritation out of his voice as he asked, “And who exactly is Lazarus?”

“A follower of Sentinel and the only true healer in this region. People come to his church in Wessex from all around for healing and to rid themselves of diseases.”

Evisar said, “If you are willing to act as a guide and lead us to Wessex, then my companions and I will spend some time helping you look for this lost apprentice of yours. My brother is a ranger with expert tracking skills and may be able to find some trace of what happened to her.”

At the mention of his ranger skills Jefon looked down at his feet and Xander couldn’t help but sneer in contempt. He just couldn’t believe how weak Jefon was. Evisar, for his part, looked at Valihorn as though he believed what he was saying, and perhaps he did. The subtle encouragement from his brother gave Jefon courage and his head slowly came up to meet Valihorn’s excited gaze.
