Chapter 10

Axel woke up in Lysandra's bed the next morning, her arm wrapped around him. He gently unwrapped her arm from around him, trying not to wake her. He kissed her forehead before dressing.

He went downstairs to find food already prepared for him, so he ate and went outside. The sun was shining brightly overhead and birds chirped happily among the trees nearby. A gentle breeze rustled through leaves causing them to sway gracefully in unison creating quite a beautiful sight to behold.

"Good morning, milord," greeted a young servant girl standing nearby holding onto several freshly baked loaves of bread covered in butter and honey. "I hope that breakfast is satisfactory."

Axel nodded politely. "Yes, thank you. It's wonderful."

The servant smiled happily before bowing respectfully before walking away quickly leaving him alone once more. Axel looked around for signs of life amongst the surrounding foliage. There were none, so he began walking towards a nearby path leading away from the mansion itself. As he did, a group of men dressed in armor marched past him heading towards the main entrance. They paid no attention to him whatsoever as they continued moving past his position.

Eventually, the path widened, and Axel could see several dozen tents scattered across the clearing beyond the trees surrounding him on all sides. Men were busy tending their horses and equipment while others sat around eating meals or sharpening weapons. It looked like an army preparing itself for war.

There was a lot of activity going on, so Axel decided it best to avoid the area entirely for now until he learned more about what was happening. He headed to the town square to help with preparations for the next dragon attack, hoping he could also find allies to assist in their battle against the elfkin.

"You have the bearing of a man with power, Axel," a voice said behind him. He turned around and saw a tall, broad-shouldered man with short dark hair and piercing blue eyes standing next to him. He wore a black cape draped over his shoulders with gold trim. A silver medallion hung around his neck depicting a skull with horns.

Axel nodded his head. "Indeed, I am."

"May I introduce myself? I am Duke Hastings, ruler of the city of Varda and leader of the Order of the Dragon."

"Pleasure," Axel said, shaking the duke's hand.

"I've heard much about you, Axel," the duke continued, looking at him closely. "The people of Varda are grateful for your service in the battle against Proximus and Baron Kern."

Axel nodded. "I was merely helping two beautiful princesses, Elsa and Liana."

"Ah, yes. The daughters of Edric," the duke said, nodding. "They are both lovely women. I believe Princess Liana has taken a liking to you."

Axel smirked.

The duke looked at him seriously. "What do you plan on doing now, Axel?"

"I need to find some powerful allies," Axel said.

"Why?"

"Because I've got enemies," Axel said, thinking about the elves - and the dragon.

The duke nodded. "Yes, of course. Who are these enemies, if I may ask?"

"An entire race of beings," Axel said.
