Chapter Thirty-nine
The men walked to an old picnic table behind the building, and Thomas tossed Billy one of the bottles of water in his hands.
âI know Sheriff has been trying to get you involved,â
he said. âI appreciate what youâre saying, and I agree with most all of it. But you really donât know what youâre getting into here.â
âIâm willing to find out, as much as time and circumstances allow,â Billy said. âThis isnât about money, although I think Cassie would be pursued by any number of sponsors, especially if she were the UFA champion. Sheâs an attractive woman in a blood-and-guts sport, and that sells, in a strange sort of way. Your grandfather is actually the one who first pitched that idea to me.â
âLet me be honest with you, Billy. We need all the help we can get, but thereâs a trust factor that Cassie and I have built over a lot of years. There havenât been many people that weâve let get close, outside of our messed-up family. What weâve got between us goes a lot deeper than fighting. I donât want to do anything that gets in the way of that.â
âIâm not looking to cause problems here. I like your grandfather and want to help if possible. If that doesnât work for you and your sister, thatâs fine. No hard feelings. Iâve got plenty of other things to be doing. In fact, I should probably be out doing them now.â
Thomas rubbed his face and stared into the woods, which were splashed with brilliant fall colors. There was more hesitation. Billy couldnât be sure that his salesmanship would prevail, but he had a good track record.
âThis has to be a family decision,â Thomas said, âand I know Sheriff is on board. Speaking for myself, I see the benefits of having an experienced agent guiding Cassieâs career, especially if she can go out to Las Vegas and win this fight. That would be a game changer. But she has to be sold on it, and so does our mother.â
âYou think thatâs a problem?â
âItâs hard to say. Weâre talking about two stubborn women. They have their own ideas about most things. And Iâd have to say that neither one is real fond of men telling them what to do.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI donât want to get real deep into it now, but a lot of our troubles go back to our father. He just about wrecked the family. I remember the fights with my mother, and I know Cassie does, too. That changed the way she feels about a lot of things, not just him. She doesnât want to be controlled by anybody. Itâs complicated.â
Now it was Billyâs turn to pause and think things over.
âYou mentioned trust,â he said, âand thatâs the way Iâve always handled my business. Lots of trust, not control. Most of my clients get to be like family. It just has to be that way if weâre going to build something that lasts.â
âWell, good luck breaking into this family.
