“I will not!” he exclaimed. “I asked that her safety at her residence be ensured. If necessary, call up more men to protect the Countess of Landsfeld!”

“Your Majesty, I have only two thousand men to reinforce the police, and that is not enough. I beg you to accede to the public’s demands; she must leave immediately, and I swear that she will be escorted safely to the border.”

“I will not sign an order to expel my friend from Bavaria! I could never forgive myself for such disloyalty. But I promise that I will do everything in my power to see that she goes of her own free will. Now leave me be.”

When Berks left, the king sat down and wrote a brief missive to Lola. His hand shook as he picked up the pen, and he felt as if he couldn’t breathe: “You must leave Bavaria today for your own safety.” The dancer replied that she’d just gotten up and that she would have breakfast in her room as usual.

Ludwig was restless; he’d never been so frightened before. The minister of war had informed him that, if he received orders to use the army to defend Lola Montez against the people, he would shoot himself in the head. The king, ignoring the warnings of his wife and children, decided to go see his lover to try to convince her before it was too late.

News of the Spaniard’s imminent departure spread swiftly, and thousands of jubilant citizens headed to Barerstrasse. They didn’t want to miss the sight of the king’s detested lover being humiliated. The dancer, oblivious to all that was occurring, was about to get dressed when her loyal musketeers burst in.
