Chapter Six

She woke with a potent surge of adrenaline that blew the cobwebs out of her mind and had her heart thumping. Her focus on her magic was pure reflex, something her mind noted even as her array and then her shields came up with barely a thought. She strained her hearing, and then heard the door opening and her saddlebags making a scratching sound as they were pushed. It must’ve been the snick of the key turning the lock that had woken her up.

She rolled off the bed, only to hear the headboard splinter as it was hit by a crossbow bolt, about where her head would’ve been from the angle at the door. Her shield would’ve handled it, but better not to be hit at all. She’d landed in a crouch, a little tangled in the blankets, but she managed to push them off her with her left hand, while she drew her sword with the right. She’d had it leaning up against the night table next to the bed.

It was dark in the room, but she could see the silhouette of a man in armor from the lantern light in the hallway. He charged in, and two more men followed him.

She backed up slightly into the corner, so they couldn’t surround her. It would limit her defensive options, but she had the shield up and the confusion spell was a part of it.

Her attacker growled and lunged in, and she parried his sword to the side and ducked the dagger strike as his left hand came swinging around. She could barely see the glint of his blade, but Luna managed to parry and twist away from a flurry of attacks.

It frustrated him, as his buddies flanked him from the sides and back a few steps trying to get an angle at her.

Regardless, he roared and charged her, depending on the idea of overpowering her. Which was what she’d hoped he’d do. Her sword swept his wide while the dagger she’d been palming struck from below. He still knocked her into the corner, pretty hard, but her shield ensured he didn’t hurt her, or even really touch her.

He gurgled for a brief moment, and then collapsed onto his back.

She wanted to throw up as he died at her feet, but she knew it was the bounty hunters, and she had two more to face, so she swallowed down the bile. They must’ve searched the city and recognized her horse at the stables, and then tracked her down from there. The only reason she wasn’t completely panicked was because she was equally sure they hadn’t contacted the guard yet. They’d want her dead first, and then delivered so they could collect their bounty.

One of the other two roared, “You bitch!”

She snorted. She’d let them live the first time, and she had a right to defend herself. She was the one being attacked after all. She also couldn’t let them live this time. Plus, she couldn’t afford the magic. It would take all her magic to knock them out again.
