BREAKFAST WAS WEIRD. I’d never really been to a B&B before and thought they were like regular hotels (which I’d been to a few of, some of them super nice for work events like fundraisers and gazillion-dollar-per-plate dinners). Instead of a buffet of breakfast stuff off to one side and a chair or two around some chipped Formica table, it was in a dining room. Like sitting at Grandma’s on Sunday kind of a dining room. A couple old enough to be Sean’s and my parents sat down at one end, an older lady in the middle, and Sean and I took up seats beside one another across from her. The buffet had been laid out family-style. A man in an apron saying I love my Pekingese with a picture of a dog in a chef’s hat bustled in and out of the room, carrying small platters of different breakfast foods and humming to himself. Everyone else had started, it seemed, and stared up at Sean and I as we picked our seats and tried to look like we did this all the time.

I didn’t think they were buying it.

Maybe because we were both dressed like we kindergartners whose parents had just given up.

“I’ll go grab us some plates,” Sean muttered. “Anything you don’t want?” My face must’ve given away my incipient answer because he held up one hand and specified, “From the buffet.”

“You’re already on to me. Nothing wet.”

“...wet?”

“Like runny yolks or soupy oatmeal. Grits are fine, though.”

He nodded. “No wet. But dry?”

“Not too dry. Just dry enough.”

The lady across from me snorted gently into her napkin, and I flashed her a grin. “Gotta keep him on his toes,” she said, winking.

I nodded. “It’s the only way to make sure he stays interested.”

Sean returned with two nearly identical plates, except one had gravy on the grits and the other didn’t. “Not wet, not too dry?”

“A man after my own heart.”

I didn’t miss his pink cheeks this time, either.
