Heidi ran her hands through her unkempt hair. The light that had come in through a slit near the ceiling had diminished. Heidi believed that night had descended. That meant she’d been gone for close to twelve hours.

The rescue window was closing.

A shiny silver hair clip fell at her feet with a light clink. Heidi picked it up. Hysterical laughter almost overcame her.

Outside the window in the door, Heidi saw no one. The room appeared empty. All sounds had disappeared.

While continuously peering through the opening, Heidi stretched open the bobby pin. She looked at the lock. Laughter welled inside her once more.

The lock was on both sides of the door. How fortuitous.

If she could remember her bad girl days, the days before she became a police officer, she might be able to pick her way out of this situation. Her first boyfriend had been excellent at picking locks. It had gotten her into and out of a few bad situations.

She placed the pin inside the keyhole and attempted to move the tumblers. No success. She needed another piece to stick in there. She couldn’t pull the bobby pin in half.

She ran her hands through her hair again, but nothing fell out this time. Vague memories of starting her hair bun flooded her mind. She’d been doing that right before the bag had come down over her head.

The man named Farley had stolen both badge and number. Why they’d chosen her instead of someone that he favored was a mystery. He couldn’t fool anyone for too long.

Which must have been the point.

Maybe he didn’t need long to fool them.

They probably chose her for convenience.

For weakness.

That thought she didn’t like.

She paced her cell. The metal bed frame was chained to the wall, but the springs… maybe she could loosen one.

On her knees, she lifted the mattress and threw it across the room. One spring conveniently dangled beneath the bed.

Heidi tugged and pulled with all her weight, but the spring wouldn’t budge. She fell back on her bum on the concrete floor and pulled her legs in. She wrapped her arms around her legs and rocked back and forth.

Head hung low; she considered the possibility of being stuck in that room for the rest of her short life. The idea wasn’t a pleasant one.

The clang of metal hitting the floor caused her head to shoot straight up.

The piece had fallen on its own.

She grabbed it, jumped to her feet, and raced back to the door. With both pieces she could get the door open. She just needed time.

Voices echoed into her room. She hid the pieces of metal in her pocket and approached the door.

“Sloan, what a pleasure to have you join us.” Sarcasm dripped from Farley’s voice.

“The boss wanted me, so I came.”

“He’s upstairs in the office with Donny.”

“Of course. I’m sure Donny is getting his payment and running like a scared rat.”

Farley fisted his hands at his sides. “You’re talking about my brother.”

“I know.” Sloan smirked as he took off in a fast stride.
