TRAILBLAZER SPOTLIGHT: WARREN DOYLE

Time, distance, terrain, weather, and the Trail itself cannot be changed. You have to change. Don’t waste any of your energy complaining over things you have no control over. Instead, look to yourself and adapt your mind, heart, body, and soul to the Trail. Remember, you will be a guest in someone else’s house the entire journey.

—Warren Doyle

Trail legend, endurance hiking mentor, and Appalachian Trail educator, Warren Doyle has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail a record of eighteen times. That’s more than any other person has ever roamed the AT. He has walked more than 38,000 miles since his first hike in 1972.

Doyle is the founder of the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association and creator of the Appalachian Trail Institute and SmartHikes (warrendoyle.com), where he has helped well over a thousand hikers prepare for thru-hiking. Many have called him the Yoda of the AT for his boundless wisdom and his photographic memory of the entire trail. In 2020 he was inducted into the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame.
