October 1800 was a particularly bad month at Mission San Juan Bautista. Those living at the mission reported six earthquakes a day for nineteen days. All of the mission buildings were badly damaged and had to be reconstructed.

At the end of 1800, Mission San Juan Bautista had grown into a community. More than 500 neophytes had converted and come to live at the mission. Together they had harvested 2,700 bushels of grain that year, and the number of livestock was steadily increasing. The mission was quickly becoming a self-sustaining place that could grow, raise, or make almost everything it needed.
