Mission San Francisco Solano had different areas for the church, the priests, and the neophytes, as well as orchards, farms, and a cemetery on its grounds, as depicted in the historic drawing above.

A new leader, Fray Buenaventura Fortuni, came to the mission in 1826. Under his guidance, many improvements were made to the mission, including the construction of a larger church, as well as a stone water cistern—a type of storage tank—that was located in the mission's courtyard. Until the cistern existed, residents of the mission had to walk to the river to fill buckets with water. Now fresh river water, perfect for drinking, washing, cooking, and laundry, was pumped right to the cistern.
