The builders quarried large slabs of sandstone from the Santa Lucia Mountains nearby. They hauled these rocks to the Carmel Valley on carretas (wooden carts pulled by oxen or mules). Using the stone, they formed walls and an arched ceiling 33 feet (10 m) high. To seal the walls, they covered them with a plaster made of seashells. Clay tiles built by hand and heated in a hot oven called a kiln created the floor. Finally, in 1797, the church was completed.

Life at the Mission

Friars and soldiers at Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo and its presidio were far from their homes and families, and did not have the comforts they once had. Fray Serra's room at the mission was simple, with a wooden bed, a scratchy blanket, a table and chair, and a candle for light. Because of these conditions, many friars and soldiers there felt alone. They didn't have much contact with people who had the same background as they did. Their language was different than the ones the Esselen and Ohlone spoke. For this reason, it was difficult for the groups to communicate.
