There’s a machine beeping next to me when I wake. I blink against the light, adjusting slowly. Why is it so bright in here?

“Hello?”

“Chancery,” Inara says. “Thank goodness.”

I clear my throat. Everything about me feels fuzzy. “What happened?”

“You used that—” Inara points at the rock still clutched in my hand. “And you singlehandedly sent a volcano dormant.”

“I never let it go?” My eyebrows ache.

Inara laughs. “Even unconscious you had such a death grip on that rock that we decided to let you hang on to it. Here, let me tell Job and Judica that you’re awake.”

I grab at her with my free arm, catching nothing but air.

“What?” She smiles at me.

“It stopped? Really? No more lava?”

Her smile grows until it’s practically brighter than the overhead fluorescent lights. “You were absolutely unbelievable. I think you can rest easy knowing that no one else will be attacking us any time soon. Or at least, I wouldn’t pick a fight with a supernova.”

“Judica and Noah are both fine?”

Inara’s eyebrow cocks. “Both fine, yes. And you appear to have recovered, too, but I’ll feel better once Job can confirm that.”

I sink back against the pillows. “Right, of course. Sure.”

My big sister brushes my hair from my face and leaves the room. I glance around and realize the beeping is coming from a machine, and a tube is going from my arm to the machine. Like when Job put me into a coma. I yank the tube out and watch as my skin heals up immediately.

Good to know I still heal, at least.

Two hundred people burst through the door, all of them talking. Or maybe it only feels like that many. Eight or ten pour through, at least, surrounding my bed. My poor, tired brain struggles to make sense of them while they’re all talking over one another.

“Chancery, you’re awake,” Edam says.

“You went way too far,” Noah says.

“That was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” Judica says.

“Mom would be so upset with you, passing out like that,” Alora says. “You need to be more careful.”

“Now step back and let me examine her.” Job grunts.

“I haven’t even seen her, what with you lot crowding around.” Balthasar shoves Edam to the right and Noah to the left and pushes through.

“Does she look alright?” Frederick asks.

“And at what point will I be allowed close enough to her Royal Fanciness to give her a hug?” Lark bounces on her toes, her face appearing over the back of Alora’s and then disappearing in alternating fashion.

I laugh. “At least no one is upset I’m awake.”

“Quite the contrary.” Edam leans against the side of my bed, taking my free hand in his.

Job circles around and lifts my arm up. “Push against me.” He shoves my arm down, and I resist. “A little weak, perhaps, but I imagine a few solid meals and she’ll be as good as new. I see that you’ve already liberated yourself from the bonds of the nutrition replenishing IV.” His eyes berate me, but I don’t care.

I force myself upward and stretch, dislodging Edam’s hand in the process.
