Chapter Fourteen
“What?” Gretta stopped stacking coffee mugs and stared at her sister. “Maybe Caleb and Hannah went for a run.”
“They took their suitcases.”
“To go where?” I asked. “There’s no way off the island.”
“Sweet lord. You don’t think they’d attempt to take the ferry, do you?” Gretta placed a hand against her chest. “Surely, they wouldn’t do something so dangerous.”
“Well, they can’t go anywhere,” I said. “The ferry’s broken, right?”
“They don’t know that,” she said.
“But they know the ferry’s at the dock,” pointed out Patrick. “They must’ve overheard us talking about it.”
“They might think they can fix it,” I said.
Why had the werewolves bailed? Had I been wrong about those two? Did they murder Julia? She and Caleb found the body. What if they found Julia and killed her and then came to get us?
The idea rang hollow.
“Let’s check the parking lot,” said Patrick. “Do you know which car they drove?”
“Yes,” said Lilly. “It’s a Ford hatchback. Red.”
Patrick and I headed outside. When we got the parking lot, we studied the six cars—our sedan, a silver Jaguar, a white Lincoln Continental, the Mazda Miata, a battered light blue truck and a white minivan with Thompson Twins Bed & Breakfast painted on the side. Gretta was right about the wind. It whipped around us, turning my hair into tiny stingers as the strands struck my face and neck.
“I bet the Jaguar is Julia’s. And the Lincoln must belong to Margaret.”
“Why?”
“Because it screams little old lady from Bar Harbor.”
“Uh-huh. And the Miata?”
“True Crime Duane.”
“We know the truck belongs to Evan—he said as much last night.” Patrick studied the rest of the parking. “There’s no red hatchback.”
“And there doesn’t appear to be a car for Claire.”
“Maybe she didn’t bring one or maybe the Miata is hers.” He pointed to the minivan. “At least one person must’ve arrived on the ferry and gotten picked up from the pier.”
“That makes sense.” I put my hands on my hips. “Magistrate Williamson made it clear he had no problem arresting them. Where do they think they’re going? It will be worse for them once the paranormal police catch up. Running away makes them look guilty. Do you think we should call the magistrate?”
“Not yet,” said Patrick. “They’re missing. We don’t know that they’re dead.”
“Well, I don’t think they’re the killers, either.”
“Maybe they are,” said Patrick. “Otherwise, why would they try to leave now?”
I had no answer. A few seconds later, Gretta and Lilly joined us outside.
“They took their car,” I said.
“We have go to the dock,” said Gretta.
“We’ll go,” said Patrick. He looked at me. “We’ll drive the car. It’ll take longer than zapping ourselves there, but we may need to drive Caleb and Hannah back with us.”
He meant we’d make them get in the car and return to the B&B because we would not let them take their stupid selves back to the mainland on a broken down ferry.
“What’s going on?”
I looked over my shoulder and saw Claire. She wore an oversized sweatshirt, jeans, and hiking boots. She’d put her hair into a clip, but the fierce wind loosed strands from the binding.
