CHAPTER 20

Nikolai

A tight knot of anger lodges in my throat when I look down at Kenzie’s bruised face and bloodied lip. What she did to us, what she took — I want to bring that pain back to her a thousand times over.

Her green eyes widen with terror under my hate-filled stare because she knows whatever happens to Luka will blow back like a toxic cloud that slowly chokes the life out of her.

But even though rage courses like blood through my veins, I can’t deny the overwhelming urge to strip her down, bend her over the chair she clings to, and fuck her senseless.

Because our pain is the same.

My arm muscles tense as I ball my fists tight. I hate that I need to feel the warmth of her arms wrapped around me and the sting of her nails digging into my back when I hit her spot. The way she moans while I’m fucking her with long and deep strokes…God, I could replay that sound all damn day long and never get tired of hearing it.

I ache for this girl.

Scratch that.

I'm obsessed with this girl.

That conflict eats away at my heart because she’s my enemy.

Our enemy.

And my job is to destroy said enemy.

I wave over Taras and my youngest brother, Zakhar, when I see them in the far corner of the waiting room. Natasha is huddled together with my mother and my sister, Tori, two of the three women shooting death glares at Kenzie.

My brothers walk toward us. Taras wears dark sunglasses since his slightly bloodshot eyes probably match Kenzie’s at this point. I put a hand on Taras’s shoulder and drop my voice. “I’m going to see Luka. Don’t let her out of your sight. And definitely don’t leave her alone with Natasha.”

The guys nod and give her a little shove toward the chair. She sinks into it, her red-rimmed eyes meeting mine, silently begging me to stay. Like she needs a lifeline and I’m it.

I turn away, ignoring the plea. My throat tightens. I can still feel her eyes on me as I walk toward the security desk to show them my identification. But I don’t turn back. I don’t throw her the lifeline. Right now, someone else needs one more.

And I have to save it for him.

“Third floor, ICU.” The guard hands me a white sticker with my name printed on it and I slap it against my chest.

“Thanks.” I walk toward the elevator, my footsteps heavy on the tile floor. I step into the middle of each square, avoiding the edges as if it can help my brother. Like it’s a game where I can control his fate by keeping myself in check.

I stab the Up button and the doors open. With every floor I ascend, my stomach sinks lower and lower until it practically grazes my sneakers. The elevator dings and the doors open to a long corridor. At the end is a sign for the intensive care unit. Taupe colors the surrounding walls.
