CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Dennis caught up with Kim and I when the crew began packing up to leave. “Why did Bev leave so suddenly? Is she all right?”

“I think watching the scenes where Josiah and our mom were courting got to her. It’s surreal to me and I’m sure to her.” As I spoke, I moved further away from Dennis. I needed no more special attention from him.

“She has struggled with that. I didn’t know Bev when she found out she was adopted so I can’t speak to those times. But she admits she hated her parents for not telling her. She acted out. Years later when she wrote her memoir it was cathartic for her. I encouraged her to write it, because after years of expensive therapy she hadn’t worked through it. I know she tried. No big secret that it affected our relationship and was a part of our being divorced.”

At that moment I felt empathy for Dennis. Just a touch. “Remember that Alli was the one who pushed Beverly to find her birth parents? Do you think that was wrong?”

“That took it up a notch for sure. But wrong?” He shrugged and blew out a long breath before continuing. “Not sure. Alli felt it was right to do. And she wanted her mom to get better too. With all the money Bev got from me in the divorce she can afford more shrinks. But enough of all this. Would you ladies like to grab a drink? I saw a little hole in the wall bar on Main Street.”

“Shorty’s!” Kim exclaimed. “That would be great. I’d love to. I’ll let Stu know I’ll be late.”

I was less enthusiastic. Libby needed to be let out. But I rethought it as there was something I wanted to ask Shorty about. “Maybe a quick one Dennis. I’ll be here a few minutes yet but will meet you two there.”

“Kim, would you give me a ride? I came up here with the crew. See you over there Jackie.”

Alli saw me and ran over. “Did you enjoy it?”

“I did. Thank you for inviting us in. I’m so proud of my niece!”

“Listen, I only have a second, but I wanted to mention that we’ll be in town at least another day. There’s some reshooting necessary.”

“Oh. Bad for you. Good for me. I get to see more of you,” I said. “What went wrong?”

“Marta discovered some questionable sections of film. We often do digital changes to scenes and audio tracks. Take something out. Adjust the sounds. Smooth over bra lines. Skinny up a body shot at an awkward angle. Innocent unremarkable trickery. But Marta said this is something bigger. She called it deceptive and wanted to show me, but I said let’s just reshoot.”

“Is this unusual?”

“I’m not experienced in that sort of thing. I’ve never been part of the editing. I just hope it’s not infighting among the crew.”

I reached to give her a hug. “You’ve got your dad to ask about this. He’s super proud of your work.
