Chapter Fifteen
Ker hadnât realised heâd fallen asleep until he was woken by something nudging his foot. Zebenn used to kick at his feet to wake him on their mornings on the road, so he woke expecting to see them standing above him. But he slowly processed that what was nudging at him wasnât a foot but something with a completely different weight and shape. And texture. A scaled texture.
âFuck me,â Ker muttered as he squirmed his way into sitting up and almost hit his head on the jutting back wall of the cave while putting as much distance between himself and Ellonyaâs tail as he was able. âCould you warn a guy?â
That was my warning. You are awake. Now we can begin.
A glance out the cave mouth confirmed Kerâs suspicion that it was still the middle of the night. He was about to start complaining until he remembered that Ellonya finally taking notice of him was exactly what he wanted and had been what heâd been attempting to stay awake for before assumedly falling asleep. Forcing himself not to yawn, he cracked his neck and tried to peer past the large glowing dragon eyes fixed on him. Seeing nothing, he sighed and felt around to find the remnants of the fire heâd made before sleeping. The power to create something like fire from nowhere was very different to controlling objects in close proximity, and Ker had never mastered it, had never even wanted to try.
Apparently sensing the direction of his thoughts, Ellonya gently breathed flame on the remaining pile of sticks. Unsure how to process that, Ker focused on not moving. Ellonya gave no indication sheâd put any thought into the gesture. More interestingly, in the new light, Ker could now see Sallvayn perched comfortably on Ellonyaâs back and looking healthy. The smug expression they were wearing was the first thing Ker noticed, but the very close second was the way their skin seemed almost to glow, the way they sat up with new pride. He wouldnât have said that they had looked unhappy or unhealthy before, but now the change was stark. He could even make out colours on their skin, where before thereâd only been a dull greenish brown.
Apparently, Ellonya had accepted their offer of mutual improvements. Or maybe that was just something that started happening because of their close proximity. Ker filed that away as something else to ask Sallvayn. âLooking good, Sall,â he said sleepily instead of articulating any of those questions.
âYes,â Sallvayn agreed, nodding.
I think we should bond.
âRight now?â
Yes.
âOkay.â Ker gulped, trying to focus on what Sallvayn had told him earlier and not the image of the moment his motherâs hair had caught fire. âWhat do you need me to do?â
He could feel Ellonya attempting to form a thought to send his way, but she seemed uncertain, like most of the thoughts she had werenât appropriate.
âYou donât know?â
Iâve never had the reason to know.
He closed his eyes, trying to pretend to himself he was still sleeping.
