Chapter Sixteen

Loren had considered killing Kella quietly, but the feeling of Litz’s soul rising so high now that they’d left the forest made it impossible to regret her decision. All her life, Litz had longed to escape the trappings she’d been born into, carving out little hidden pieces of difference, of escape. Whether through Loren or the army or magic, she’d made herself a person who wasn’t the princess people expected her to be. But now, finally, she had relinquished her royal personhood and responsibilities entirely.

Eisha would be a point of regret, but there was nothing that could be done about that for now, and hopefully, that would be enough for Litz.

“Why are you so godsdamn happy?” Kella was asking. With the salve from Ker’s bag, Litz’s leg was feeling much better, though Loren still longed to fly back and ensure that the dragon who had attempted to kill her died horribly.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve flown in the open air.” She raised her arms, childishly delighted as she often was when flying and had been since Loren had first taken her up this high. Loren ached with fondness thinking on it now.

She would miss the comforts of ever-present attendants and the cool waters of home to bathe and fish in as she pleased, but it had been a long time since she had gotten any kind of excitement. Though that wasn’t something she characteristically sought, she was thrilled to finally escape the stifling range of the Circle’s influence. Spending her life keeping them happy out of fear for Litz’s life was no way to live. And neither was lying to her rider, as the humans’ new conversation was beginning to remind her.

The archer boy was explaining that unlike the others, he had seen something like that chase display before. “Only there, they can do it with humans too,” he said.

Ah, because he was the one from Senice. Conceptually, the place felt upsetting to consider. Dragons were naturally the most powerful creatures in whatever environments they found themselves in. To seek more seemed greedy at best and grotesquely overreaching at worst.

“I think it was easier to control humans there. They expected and wanted to be controlled. It gets seared into everyone’s heads that dragons are the authority on everything, and that going against them is like going against God. Who is also a dragon there.” He moodily curled in on himself as he smiled a little cynically at Ellonya’s new saddle. Litz looked a little closer at the padding for Loren, who couldn’t help but be interested. It had been a gift, commissioned by the king herself the day before. “That’s why I don’t like getting okay with these ‘friendly’ dragons. Feels like I’m slipping back into that mindset. Every time I helped kill a dragon, I felt like I was doing something evil. I had to learn to live for that, to like how wrong it felt.”

“That’s how I feel using magic,” said Ker. “It’s always felt
