Chapter 20

Annelise

So you’ve come around, have you?”

I sat in Jade’s chair once again, her face inches from the side of mine as she lined my lips, a squint that almost looked angry she was so focused on my face. It was all the exact same as last time, tea and consultation first and everything.

The main difference was that now I was pretty sure Natasha was going to actually come back for me. The way she’d reached over and taken my hand before I stepped out of the car, held it in both of hers, and just stared at me… and the way I’d found myself just staring back. I felt like she never wanted to let me go.

Which seemed accurate, judging by our conversation while I had to endure massaging her incredibly gorgeous body and not royally freaking out about it the other day. She wanted me to stay, after the summer, until… who knows when?

How long would I be willing to stay? This wasn’t my world. This wasn’t where I fit in. I was faking everything I was doing, pretending I was one of them, but obviously—anyone could tell, if they watched long enough, this wasn’t where I belonged. Would I be able to stay for the fall? And then the winter, and I’d find a reason to stay for the spring, too—that trip to Sri Lanka, I was sure—and then I’d feel like I had to stay next summer, too, and…

Was it really a problem, though? I was making more money than I even dreamed of at the end of my education, and I was feeling more valued here than I figured I ever would. It just didn’t feel real, even sitting here in the chair of the Seychelle family’s favorite stylist, looking at myself in a black-and-gold dress off one shoulder, my hair pinned up in a stylishly messy bundle, smokey-eye makeup making me look like someone I couldn’t recognize.

“You were right,” I said, still just staring at the stranger in the mirror. “Natasha is… a lot better than I was giving her credit for.”

“Now, isn’t that sweet,” Jade laughed. “I’ve heard she’s had quite the transformation. You’ve had some effect on her, haven’t you?”

I flushed. “I-I don’t know about that. I’ve just been helping her with work and in the house.”

Jade stepped back, looking me over with an appraising smile. “Keep telling yourself that, sweetheart. And you? You look like you’re in your element now. You’ve adapted, haven’t you?”

I frowned. “I look more in my element because you just dressed me up to look like the most stylish person in the state.”

“Well, of course I did,” Jade laughed. “The Rochester bigwigs are going to be there, aren’t they? You can’t coax donations out of people like that wearing just anything.”

“I’m not the one making the impassioned speeches,” I laughed. “That’s what we have Natasha for.”

Natasha, who hadn’t given a speech at one of our events since the gala, where she broke down and cut it short. Natasha, who Zara and Alex and I met with each other to discuss how to keep from making speeches.
