Chapter Eleven

I WAS HAPPY TO SAY that I won three hundred and fifty dollars at the slot machines when we went to talk to Sherman. Lucy, sadly, lost thirty dollars. I bought her lunch to cheer her up over the loss, and we spent a little time shopping at the nearby outlet mall before heading home.

The following morning, I decided that I needed to put that money in the bank. I didn’t like having large amounts of cash on me, and three hundred and fifty dollars might not have been a lot to some, but I grew up in the South where we didn’t always have a lot of extra money. We weren’t poverty-stricken, but Mama made sure that we kids knew how to handle money. It also gave me an excuse to talk to Carol Johnson.

Carol had been married to Sherman Wright, and according to him, afterward she was married to Drew for six months. I wondered what she had to say about Drew’s death, and I also wondered why she had taken the job working with Suzie Bell and had seemingly tried to keep their marriage a secret from her.

I waited in a short line while Carol and another teller waited on customers. Thankfully, I got Carol as my teller. She smiled at me when I got to her window. “Good morning, Allie. How are you doing?”

I smiled. “I’m great. You won’t believe it, but my friend Lucy and I went to the casino yesterday, and I won three hundred and fifty dollars.”

Her eyes widened. “Really? Well, good for you! I never win anything when I go to the casino.”

“Me either. At least, normally I don’t, but we decided to take a drive over there just to see how our luck was running. Unfortunately, Lucy last thirty dollars, so I guess her luck wasn’t running so well.” I chuckled. “I was excited about winning the money. Heck, if I had won thirty dollars, I would have been thrilled.”

She laughed. “I know the feeling. What did you want to do today?”

“I think I’m going to deposit this money. If I don’t, I’ll blow it all in one shopping trip. I love the fall, and I’ve been itching to buy some nice things for the house, but my husband said I already have lots of nice things for the house.”

She laughed again. “I know what you mean. Husbands are just that way, aren’t they?”

I nodded. “What does your husband say when you bring shopping bags into the house?” It suddenly occurred to me that I didn’t know if Carol was married or not. Her last name was Johnson, so I knew she wasn’t using the last name of either of her first two husbands, and I wondered if she had married again.

“Oh, my husband doesn’t say a thing because I don’t have a husband. I can shop to my heart’s desire.” She laughed heartily at this.

I laughed along with her. “Well, I guess you don’t have any problems then, do
