Letâs agree to agree, whether or not peeps secretly wanted to marry one of them, the majority of non-Jews viewed the Rothschilds as highfalutinâ, hook-nosed, greedy Christ-killers who controlled the world economy, facilitated the assassinations of more than a few U.S. presidents (including Lincoln), and/or quite possibly started the War of 1812! While these overwrought conspiracy theories may or may not continue to hold sway over current anti-Semitic factions bent on blaming the Jews for the so-called evils of Wall Street, at the time the Rothschilds rose to prominence, the timbre of Europe was still one of rampant paranoia about Jews and money regardless of the fact that banking was now technically fair game to both Jew and Gentile alike.
