Itâs like thereâs something within trying to break out. I would say almost like a caged animal, but this feels different.
The last time Akira Daishi was in England, during the mid-1980s, it was for a business deal that fell through, and he saw little need to return. Today he was sealing the most important business deal of his life, though his partner had always done the traveling. The mansion was as grand as he had expectedâold, large, and expensive.
Another reason he had never returned to England was the weather, of course. The wind blew through his thin silver hair, and he bundled up, even though it was only autumn. He walked to the front doors and found a pair of large brass knockers in the shape of lions there, old and in need of polishing. He reached up to the handle and was nearly scared out of his mind when the knockers spoke in unison.
âWho goes there?â
âCute. Not very original,â he replied.
âAttitude will not gain you entry,â they said.
The doors opened, and he was happy to see a real person standing there. It was a woman, tall and attractive, with long auburn hair.
âMr. Daishi?â she asked with an unmistakably English accent.
âPlease, call me Akira.â
âOf course.â
She greeted him with a warm smile, he returned it, and they shook hands. He tried to walk to the doorway, but for some reason his feet were frozen to the cement steps. He looked down as the brass lions rambled on, making idle threats.
âWhat is this?â
âOh, you can come in.â
Those few words from her were all that was needed for him to move again. He stepped into the manor to see a glorious lobby, centuries old. He looked back at the steps, not sure what to think.
âWhy couldnât I move?â
âItâs a safety feature,â she replied. âThe lions really donât do much, but my father-in-law hasnât figured out how to shut them up. So years ago he installed a new safety feature to prevent intruders from entering. You must be a member of the family or be invited in by a member of the family.â
âThat simple?â
âWell, in a few minutes, the steps would have burst into flame, and you would have been killed,â she said casually.
âExcuse me?â Akira had to know more. âHas this safety feature ever failed?â
âOnly once. Richard is out back in the cemetery.â
English autumns were gray, the same color as the tombstones that Richard sat among. He glanced between the sea and one stone.
âShe always loved the ocean.â
Richard turned to see who was speaking to him. An Asian man of many years, Akira Daishi, was there. He walked up to Richard.
âWhen did you get here, Akira?â
âJust now,â Akira replied.
Standing above Richard now, Akira looked left and right for a place to sit, but there was only tall grass and a few grave markers.
âStill afraid to get your nice clothes dirty?â
Akira remained standing, the wind from the sea blowing against him.
âI understand you had another vision,â he said.
âTheyâre becoming more frequent,â Richard said. âAnd intense.
