Surprise Guests

Shuffling up behind me were two retired Hawaiian cops who I’d last seen in Zangrabar and behind them were the two women I’d left them with.

‘Rick! Akamu! What are you doing here?’ I squealed and wrapped them both into a hug. With an arm around their necks, they both hugged me back. Rick was Caucasian and Akamu Polynesian, but both about the same age and the same shape, which is to say a little rotund. They were short too at around five feet seven or eight, but they were in their seventies so had most likely been taller as younger men.

‘We hitched a lift with the Maharaja,’ said Rick, a beaming smile on his face. ‘He had a bunch of private jets coming this way.’

‘Yeah,’ said Akamu. ‘We just asked one of the royal guard to pass a message when we heard he had this big trip to London planned. He was going to be here for a few days, and we figured we could meet up with you.’

Rick chuckled as he took over telling the story. ‘So then this courier turns up at our place asking that we attend the banquet tonight. The Maharaja has a touch for the dramatics it seems because he asked us to keep it a secret so he could surprise you.’

Akamu’s face took on a serious expression. ‘It looks to me like something went wrong though. Did I hear that the ambassador was murdered?’

‘Yeah, we’ve been watching you run back and forth all night,’ added Rick. ‘I thought we were never going to catch your eye.’

I nodded ruefully. ‘The ambassador was killed some time this afternoon, or possibly in the very early evening. The whole thing is a terrible mess. I have to find out who did it and pray it wasn’t one of the Zangrabarians because …’

‘They’ll be straight back to killing each other,’ Rick concluded sadly.

They hadn’t been able to get a word in until now, but Agnes and Mavis waved a hello as the conversation reached a lull. They looked good with tans and both had gained a couple of pounds as they relaxed into a more homebound lifestyle. They were in their sixties and both attractive women.

I shook my head at the surprise of seeing them, then remembered the policeman standing two feet away. ‘Everyone, this is Agent Garrett of Scotland Yard.’ I saw the girls’ eyes widen. ‘Wayne, sweetie, could you be a dear and get me some water?’

His expression registered surprise for a moment, but he said, ‘Sure, okay. You want sparkling or still?’

‘Sparkling would be lovely, thank you so much.’ As soon as he moved out of earshot, I hissed, ‘Aren’t you two still wanted by half the law enforcement agencies on the planet? How did you get into England without being arrested?’

Agnes smirked. ‘Fake passports, sweetie. We’ve been in Zangrabar for months, Patricia. It didn’t take us long to find the required underworld contacts.’

Both the men shared a look. They’d met the girls on board the Aurelia when they were robbing people and we caught them.
