CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Even though he knew it was a long shot, Paul looked for Rob at his desk when he walked into the station that morning. He settled into his chair, and while waiting for his computer to boot up, he pulled out his phone and sent him a text.
Howâs it going?
Better. Annabel came home last night.
Good. Is she feeling better?
His phone rang.
âThis is stupid,â Rob said, and Paul grinned at the familiar grouchy morning behavior of his best friend and partner. âWhy am I texting you when we can talk? Iâm not a teenager.â
âDamn right youâre not.â
âDonât mess with me before Iâve had my coffee, Paulie. Anyway, sheâs resting and feeling better. The kids are happy sheâs home. And both my mother and mother-in-law are here.â Robâs voice dropped. âIâm going crazy. I need to get back to work, but I gotta be here, you know?â
Paul couldnât hide his smile. âI know. Youâll come when you can. As long as sheâs okay.â
âYeah. Sheâs an amazing woman. I swear sheâs stronger than me. We had a long talk last night and said everything we were afraid to tell each other, and we both agreed, no more kids. Sheâs happy with how we are and so am I.â
âSo Iâm stuck with you now, is that what youâre trying to tell me?â
âLike fucking superglue, buddy. I think sheâs going back to work next week, but she told me if she keeps feeling as good as she is now, sheâs ready to get rid of me as early as tomorrow.â
âGod knows I need you here.â
âOh yeah? Tell me what youâve got.â
Paul briefed Rob on everything that happened, ending with the bizarre drug arrest of Chase Ulrich. Heâd come in to discover that, as expected, the young man had been bailed out by his mother.
âHuh,â Rob said, and Paul could hear the wheels turning in his partnerâs head. He needed this tossing of ideas back and forth; it was one of the reasons he missed Rob. Friendship first, but they also worked so well together.
âWhatâre you thinking?â
âIâm thinking Sonny Boy had a nice gig going. Maybe he was stealing daddyâs prescriptions for himself and to sell. When Ulrich found out, they had a row, and the kid clunked him on the head. Fit of anger. Those drugsâll do it.â
âYeah, and almost seems more likely than Shane, our playboy blackmailer. He had no reason to want to kill Ulrich, especially if Ulrich was paying him off. That could go on for years.â
âTrue, but if he found out his rich sucker was done with him and moving on, he mightâve gotten angry enough to kill him as well. Sort of like, âIf I canât have you, no one else will either.â â
âYouâve got a point there.â
âSo whatâre you going to do first? Pay a visit to the bad boy? Catherine Ulrich is going to put you on her shit list, man, if you start questioning her baby boy. Sheâs a tiger when it comes to him.â
Paul grimaced. âYeah, Iâve noticed.
