Chapter 18

Carnegie Hall, NY

July 20

4:00 p.m.

“Wow! Look at the number of people in this audience,” Ellie said as she looked around the theater.

Sister Maggie and Ellie headed to the section reserved for special guests, friends, and family. Sister Mary Patrice and the Bauer family members were seated in front of them.

“I bet there are over twenty-five hundred people in here,” Sister Maggie remarked as she took her assigned seat. Ellie sat beside her.

“Aunt Maureen, I remember Casey Bauer when she was a superstar. I watched her perform live at one of her last concerts. She had the audience clapping and singing with her. I remember that she had some cool dance moves and all while wearing the highest of heels and a sparkling dance outfit! She even had backup dancers. Boy, could she dance up a storm on stage. What will she be wearing?”

“She’ll be wearing her habit, of course. I don’t think she’ll be dancing up a storm, but I wouldn’t put it past her to have a few moves that will endear her to the audience.” Sister Maggie leaned her shoulder into Ellie’s. “I remember when Sister Mary Felicia was a novice, we had our general chapter at the motherhouse. She and the other novices were at the front table signing in the sisters for the sessions. Later that day, I found the novices in the basement learning some dance steps from her. Sister Mary Felicia didn’t know me at the time, and I’m sure she worried about my reaction. I told her it was wonderful. Dancing is an expression of joy. Although I couldn’t help but laugh when she said that she was working on something like ‘dancercise for nuns.’ Sister Mary Felicia called it nunnercise.” Sister Maggie chuckled. “I loved the name and her enthusiasm. Sister Mary Felicia said she noticed that some of the nuns were not as physically active as they should be, and she felt it would affect their health as well as their work for the community. I completely agreed and so we all began taking her nunnercise classes twice a week.”

“That’s wonderful!” Ellie grinned. “You are such a cool lady, Aunt Maureen.”

“Ha! I do my best.”

“By the way, did you get to visit St. Malachy parish the other day?” asked Ellie.

“I did. I met the new sister from the Dominican Republic. Sor Elena was beside herself when she discovered that the sacristy had been ransacked and the sacred vessels stolen.”

“Did you introduce her to Luis Garcia, the owner of El Perro?”

“I certainly did!”

The two women laughed. Sister Maggie often shared her ministry experiences with Ellie.

“I also spoke with Father O’Connor,” Sister Maggie said in a more serious tone.

“The exorcist?”

“The one and only! I told him about Michael’s interest in possibly converting.”

Ellie nodded and smiled, but Sister Maggie couldn’t help but notice the smile didn’t reach her eyes.

This is not the time or place to discuss Michael with Ellie.

Sister Maggie decided to say nothing more about Michael before the show. But she wondered at Ellie’s more subdued mood.
