Holly was surprised to see me at her door. Delighted, too. She always had that cheery smile on her face when she saw me. It warmed my heart every time. One glance at my feet, and her expression changed to concern. I stepped inside her condo and briefed her on the situation.

“You shouldn’t have run, Aaron.”

“But he would have arrested me. I’m sure of it.”

“You didn’t do it, right?”

“What? Of course not. Who do you think I am? You really think I would hurt Nancy?”

“No. That’s not what I meant. I mean, if you are innocent then you should have let them arrest you. Let the law take its course. You would have gone free eventually. By running away you just look guilty.”

“Eventually. That’s a long time to rot in jail, Holly.”

“And what’s the plan now? Are you going to hide the rest of your life?”

“No. Only until they find the real killer.”

“That’s the problem, Aaron. They won’t. They won’t if they think you killed Nancy and they focus on finding you instead of investigating the case. There’s still time. Turn yourself in.”

“No. No. No way am I going back. You can’t help me. Fine. I’ll leave.”

“That’s not what I meant. You are welcome to stay as long as you like.”

“Are you sure? I just realized, you’ll be in trouble if anyone finds out. I shouldn’t have come.”

“Aaron, I’m sure. No one will find out if we’re careful. Please stay.”

I gazed into her eyes, glad to see someone I could trust. Hugging her tight, I was grateful for this one true friend I had been blessed with. We had a quick lunch that consisted of a buffet of leftovers from her fridge. As we cleaned up, she frowned.

“How did you get here? You didn’t drive, did you?”

“No. I took a cab. I’m not stupid.” I smiled. “And I had him drop me off a couple of blocks away just in case the cops get to him. I even stopped at the bank and withdrew whatever I could while I still had the chance.”

“Awesome. Now we just need to get you some clothes and shoes.”

“And toiletries.”

“Of course. I’ll go shopping.”

Once Holly left I wondered how to pass the time. With nothing else to do, I switched on the TV. Bad decision. My mug stared at me from the news channel. It was official. I was the prime suspect for murdering Nancy. There was no way I could step out of this place.

My mood lifted when Holly returned. She showed me her loot from the shopping spree. At least I didn’t have to worry about clothes and shoes. Not that I had anywhere to go. I could survive here in sweats and bare feet. Soon she started dinner. Spaghetti and meatballs — my favorite. We settled at the dining table with our plates and a bottle of wine. The conversation was light — we shared anecdotes, dug out long-forgotten memories — anything to keep our minds off my predicament.

In the kitchen, I washed the dishes, Holly put them away.
