Chapter 25

It didn’t take long for word to spread throughout the different precincts no matter how tight-lipped they were supposed to be with the news. A confirmation had come in, Lutz was notified, and Don and the forensic team had left the building forty minutes earlier.

Phelps was pulling a double. Information would come into the precinct first, and he’d learn about Jill much faster than if he went home and waited for somebody to call him.

My desk phone rang, and all eyes turned to me. I picked up the receiver, cleared my throat, and answered. “Yeah, Boss? I’m on my way.” I rose from my desk and glanced at Mark. I insisted he stay put for the moment, but from the look on his face, he knew that whatever Lutz was about to tell me couldn’t be good.

“Jesse—”

I held up my hand. “Give me five minutes, Mark. I promise you if it’s about Jill, I’ll come back and get you.”

As I walked down the hallway toward Lutz’s office, dread was building inside me. The bad news was about to hit home, and one of our own would have the worst day imaginable. I’d come close on several occasions with Hanna being in harm’s way because of her association with me, and that guilt never went away. That was something many people in law enforcement had to deal with, and unfortunately, the outcome was devastating at times.

I rapped on Lutz’s door, and one look at his somber face told me that my worst fears were confirmed.

“Come on in, Jesse, and shut the door.”

I did as told and shook my head. I didn’t want to hear the news. Once heard, it couldn’t be unheard.

Lutz tipped his head at the guest chair. I was sure he didn’t want to utter the words he was about to say any more than I wanted to hear them.

“I’m sure you’re well aware that Don, Mike, and Danny are at a crime scene.”

I nodded. “Obviously, a death. Just rip the bandage off, Boss.”

“It’s Jill. She was found in the trunk of her Optima.”

Sadness hit my gut as I pinched back the tears. I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand and let out a long sigh. Mark and Jill had recently become engaged and had already set a wedding date. We had all attended the engagement party last summer, and from the way Mark and Jill acted, they were over the moon with happiness and making plans for the future, just like Hanna and I had been doing. My anguish turned into anger. We needed answers for Mark and Jill’s family, and we had to find out what had happened to the other people who had gone missing in the eighteenth district.

“Now what? Who’s going to tell Mark? He knows something is up. It’s written all over his face.”

“I know, I know, and I don’t want him hearing it through the rumor mill.” Lutz reached for his phone, and I stood. “Where are you going?”

“I thought you’d want to talk to him privately.
