TWENTY-TWO

Saskia’s gaze dropped to Alex. He stared back, his wolf surging in his eyes for a split second before Alex was once again in control.

“Okay,” she replied, looking back at her brother. Although he was the one doing the ordering around, she could tell he didn’t like doing it.

But he was right.

She had to go back to Zeke and face him.

Sliding from the edge of the bed, Alex followed her brother from the room. He stopped as he left, giving her an encouraging smile before disappearing from sight. With a heavy feeling in her chest, Saskia pulled on her shoes and collected her purse.

With only a cursory glance at herself in the mirror, she stopped and went back for a closer inspection. There were bags under her eyes, evidence that the late night and early rise had done nothing for her complexion. The rough ponytail she’d done that morning was coming apart, wisps of hair surrounding her face.

And Alex had seen her like that?

Dropping her handbag back onto the bed, she undid the knot keeping her hair up and ran a brush through her blonde locks. When it had been somewhat tamed, she pushed it behind her ears and placed the brush back.

Taking a deep breath, she pulled open her door and closed it quietly behind her. Alex glanced over, his nostrils flaring ever so slightly, his eyes beginning to burn as they drifted down her face and neck, taking a leisurely circuitous route of the rest of her body.

She responded to his inspection, liquid heat pooling between her thighs. In her mind’s eyes, she saw her wolf becoming submissive to the mate she knew she had in Alex.

“Saskia?” Saxon asked.

Dragging her eyes from Alex, she turned to her brother. Breathlessly, she said, “Sorry. What?” Saskia hoped her brother couldn’t see the blush flushing her cheeks. Even if he didn’t see it, he would have been able to smell how attracted she was to Alex.

He frowned, his eyes narrowing at Alex like he’d physically touched her to bring out that reaction. “I said are you ready to go?”

“Sure.”

“Where’s your suitcase?”

“In my bedroom.”

“I’ll get it,” Alex rumbled, brushing past her.

“Where’s Casey?” Saskia asked, hoping to draw the attention away from them.

“Bathroom. Once she’s out, we’ll be ready to go.”

They all left together, but down at the car, Saxon insisted that Alex sit up front with him. Sliding into the backseat with Casey, Saskia played nervously with her fingers, her eyes fixed on the scenery that passed by her window. More than once she felt Alex’s eyes on her, but she didn’t dare look at him. It would have only made it harder to walk away.

Saxon pulled up at her house much too soon, and as she stared up at it, she forced herself to remember that Zeke had stayed in Buxton at her request, and that he was a decent male.

“I’ll call you later,” Saxon said to her through the rearview mirror. She nodded, turning her head to the petite female beside her when she touched her hand.
