Chapter Twenty-Three

I’d decided weeks ago to take the day of the ball off so I could mentally prepare for the ordeal. It was strange to be able to sleep in on a Saturday and not have to spend my day helping people with their problems. It was going to be a switch having so many conjurers helping me out with my dilemma instead.

The new Council leaders had hired a grand old mansion that could be used for weddings and other events to host the ball in. No normals had been invited and the staff who would be working were all conjurers. The mansion was secluded enough that once war broke out, the noise would be contained to the grounds.

We would be teleporting to the mansion at nine our time, which was ten Boston time. We wouldn’t be using magical carriages to travel to the ball from the Council headquarters. Everyone would be pooling their power to teleport directly to the property instead.

I was too nervous to eat my dinner at six and merely picked at my food. “Don’t worry, foolish girl,” Grandma said. “Nothing will go wrong tonight. We’ll stop Torrance before he can execute his mad plan for dominance.”

“I just wish we knew what the CAT is going to use for a distraction,” Aunt Isabel said.

“Whatever it is, it’s going to be big,” Aunt Janet predicted.

I dredged up a smile, but kept my mouth clamped shut. I knew exactly what the distraction was going to be. So did Jess. My bestie had been grinning in anticipation ever since I’d gotten up that morning. “I can’t wait for this all to be over so everything can go back to normal,” I said.

That comment brought looks of pity from the living and the dead alike. “Have you forgotten about the other reason why the ball is being held?” Aunt Isabel asked.

“The Keeper is going to bring out the Book of Crests and you’ll find out who you’ll be forming a new coven with,” Aunt Janet reminded me.

“You can tell she’s really looking forward to it,” Reggie said mockingly. The phantoms snickered at my morose expression. They’d stuck to me like glue today. They were unwilling to leave my side just in case fresh drama occurred. They were envious that Jess would get to witness the final battle with our enemies tonight. Jess was being insufferably smug and Geddon was almost as bad. My familiar was waiting for us in the cottage, pacing the floor in anticipation.

“I can’t wait,” I lied. My ring was a mixture of gray and purple to reflect my mood. I both dreaded and feared the coming events. It seemed unduly harsh that I would not only have to battle a megalomaniacal mobster, but I would also have to go through the ordeal of my husband being chosen by fate.

“Did Wyatt manage to notify all of our allies about the signal?” Grandma asked. Courtney and Eve were having dinner with their partners. Eve spent half of her nights at the Pentland Coven mansion in Meadowvale now.
