CHAPTER 11—NIGHT DRIVE

Akil arrived a bare five minutes later and Gabe buzzed him in. The two men crossed the marble floor to where the girls stood out on the balcony admiring the view of Al Dubriz.

Two days ago, on the way to the Youth Hostel, Akil had instructed Faruk to stop the car in front of the Old Palace and they’d looked down over the city toward this high-rise area. Now they were facing in the opposite direction—to where the Old Palace sat high on its hilltop, invulnerable and majestic.

Stacy turned toward him as though no time had passed since their former conversation. “You should open your Old Palace up for specialised tourism,” she said. “It’s terrible that no one ever sees inside it except a few royal guests.”

He caught Halima’s surprised expression, and raised an eyebrow at her before giving his full attention to the unsuitable opinionated woman who’d so instantly attracted him. “No. Absolutely not. It’s full of treasures and family items. We don’t want crowds of people milling through who won’t know what they’re looking at, and won’t respect things.”

“Exactly,” she agreed, sending him an exasperated glare. “That’s why I said specialised tourism. For people who do know. People like my friend Conrad. Have you heard about the Caliph’s Castles in Jordon?” She drew a quick breath and added, “Con’s an archaeologist. He paid a fortune to come and see them a couple of years ago. One had been entirely rebuilt—”

“Qasr el-Kharaneh,” Akil murmured.

That stopped her in her tracks. “Oh,” she said, softening her gaze. “Yes. The one with the steep walls and all the narrow window slits.”

Aki leaned down onto the railing surrounding the balcony and reached for her hand.

She pulled it away.

He shrugged and tightened his expression. Okay, if that was the way she wanted it… “Of course I know about them. The desert castles south of Damascus. Some of them are in ruins. Your famous ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ made his headquarters in one for a while.”

“Yes,” she agreed. “But I’m not talking about ordinary tourists. I mean scholars and specialists. People who’d give their eye-teeth to see an ancient building that’s been lived in for hundreds of years and is still in good condition. Not a re-built replica. And not an old wrecked one that’s just a pile of stones.”

He tried to hide a smile. The enthusiasm in her voice and the sparkle in her blue eyes were hard to resist, but this was none of her business. “That won’t be happening. Sorry.”

She pressed her lips together before saying, “But it’s hardly ever used—you said so the other day.”

Halima touched Stacy’s arm. “It’s a royal residence, Stacy. We may not live there any longer, but it’s full of our history. It’s a private place.”

“And speaking of privacy,” Gabe inserted, reaching for Halima’s hand.

She turned to him with a smile. “Yes Gabe. We need to get out of their way. We’ll see you both a little bit later.”

Akil waited until they’d left before he said anything else.
