We stood around chatting and talking for so long, it was getting dark before we noticed how much time had passed. The conversation ran the gamut. I told them all about Dixon and I could sense their rising anger at how he had treated me but I also saw them trying to contain it. But we also talked about our work. They were just as interested in me being a realtor as I was in their investigative work. It all sounded pretty exciting to me. Mateo tried to play it off. He insisted that most of their job consisted of surveilling potentially cheating spouses and doing background checks for suspicious people. Still, it was more exciting than talking about the attractive backsplash in a kitchen or extolling the benefits of a hardwood floor.

There was a growing kind of tension in the room, but it wasn’t a bad thing. It was more like anticipation. I wanted so badly to keep spending time with all of them and they all seemed just as interested in me.

Finally, I had to bid them goodbye. It had been a strange day. I made myself some dinner and kicked back on the couch with Indiana. I turned on the TV but I didn’t really watch it. All I could think about were those Marquez boys. Although I did sleep much better that night.

In the morning, I woke up giddy. I had three showings that day, and the guys and I had agreed that they would come and hang out with me while I worked. That wasn’t anything I’d done before with a guy, yet this had been my idea. I had to work, but I simply had to see them also. They needed to work too, so they decided they would switch off.

That morning at the office, I was practically on the edge of my seat with excitement. I was walking on air thinking about seeing Javier in a little bit, and then Alejandro, and then Emiliano… I kept muttering their beautiful names under my breath, picturing what Alejandro’s silky, dark hair would feel like between my fingers or how Emi’s elegant hands could make me feel…

“Ellie.” That was my boss, Myra. She was waving a hand in front of my face.

I sat up and smiled tightly. “Hey.”

“Hey,” she said, chuckling. “I’ve been saying your name…”

“Oh, sorry.”

“That’s alright. You just seem like you’re in a great mood today actually. I was curious.”

“Oh.” I ducked my head, a little bashful. “I just met some…somebody. A guy. One single guy.” I shrugged. “I like him.”

“That’s good,” she said, leaning in the doorway. “You seeing him later?”

I felt like some scandalous woman, quasi-dating four men at once. The possibilities made my cheeks burn. “Yeah,” I said. “Just casual. See what happens.”

“Well, that’s great,” Myra said nodding, peering at me over her wire-rim glasses. “Be casual. Explore your options. Good luck with your new guy.”

“Thanks.” I watched Myra go and muttered to myself: “Explore your options…”

The only thing that threatened to wreck my giddy mood was trying to figure out how the spell factored into the Marquezes.
