Today, an executive order is essentially a directive from the president that bypasses Congress. These are often issued during times of crisis when Congress wouldn’t usually have time to act. During World War II, President Roosevelt issued several executive orders. The most controversial and well known of these was executive order 9066—issued February 19, 1942— which forced Japanese Americans into internment camps out of fears that they were spies for the Japanese government. Over 110,000 Japanese American people were forced into camps and endured poor living conditions and treatment for the next two and a half years. Roosevelt finally suspended the order and the detainees were released. During the war, Roosevelt also issued executive orders that would aid in the procurement of materials needed for the war effort and establishing a wartime workweek of forty-eight hours.
