Jessie

Jessie propped her hands on her knees and tried to catch her breath as she peered out into the night past the tennis courts. A light breeze whistled through the trees dotting the park.

There was no movement whatsoever. Where had he gone?

Shit.

She’d chased the dark-clad figure more than a few blocks, across two backyards and over a fence, before losing him in McKinley Park.

She had gotten close. So close she’d noticed him limping as he ran.

After a moment, she headed back the way she’d come. She was on H Street when a police car pulled over. The driver’s door opened, and Colin came around front to greet her. He held her close to his chest for a long moment before stepping back so he could look at her. “Oh, Jessie. What were you thinking?”

“I was so close, Colin. If I had been faster, just a little bit faster, I could have caught him.”

“And then what?”

She didn’t answer him. She didn’t have an answer. She only knew that the intruder had gotten away.

“Come on,” Colin said, ushering her into the car.

“Is Zee okay?” she asked.

“She’ll be fine, although she might be suffering from shock.”

“What about Diane?”

Colin frowned. “You didn’t enter the house?”

“After the intruder pushed me to the ground, I told Zee to call for help, and I took off after him.”

Colin was quiet for a moment. Jessie knew him well enough to know he was frustrated that she would chase after the guy. “I couldn’t let him just run off without trying to ID him.”

“You had no idea of the risk you were taking,” Colin told her. “Two people were killed tonight, stabbed multiple times. Zee was trying to comfort the female when we arrived. I don’t know if she even realized the woman was dead.”

Jessie rubbed a hand over her face. “I couldn’t just let him run off without giving chase.” She shook her head. “The intruder was either already hiding inside before Diane returned home from work or broke in while Zee and I were watching the house.” It sickened her to think that two people had been killed while she sat in the car right outside.

“What were you and Zee doing there in the first place?”

“Easton Scott hired me to watch his wife, Diane, whom he believed might be cheating on him. He didn’t want to confront her until he had proof.”

“How long have you been watching her?”

“Two days.”

Silence.

“The man in the bedroom with Diane is not her husband.” She tried to remember his name. “Zee took a picture of his license plate after he went inside the house. He’s a car salesman. His vehicle is parked close by.”

“Any idea where Diane’s husband is tonight?”

“He’s away on business.” She rubbed her temples. “He said he was going to Vegas. Why would he hire me to watch his wife if he planned to commit murder?”

“Jealousy can make reasonable people behave in irrational ways.” Colin turned onto the street where the Scotts lived. Police vehicles lined both sides. EMTs were unloading a stretcher from the ambulance and carrying it inside.
