CHAPTER 16

MAGDALENA

Initially, I told Geoff no romance or gruesome movies. I said no gore because I didn’t want to be freaked out, basically jumping in his lap to be rescued. I said no romance for two reasons. One—romance is not always on a guy’s top favorites list. Two—too much sappiness too soon could have one, or both, of us in some awkward state of how to proceed after the movie ends. So, we saw an action/suspense movie.

The better choice, right?

Wrong.

Don’t get me wrong, the movie itself is good. I would watch it again. But some of the suspense plots had me so on edge. My heart pounding, knuckles white, my eyes glued to the screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if, at some point, I’d cut the circulation off in Geoff’s hand… more than once.

No matter how hard I’d tried, I couldn’t keep my composure. Just as the movie seemed to settle down, a new twist was thrown into the mix. By the end of the film, I’m sure he was relieved to no longer feel my sweaty palms on his own and overjoyed to have blood flowing into all of his fingers.

The credits scroll up the screen as we head for the theater exit, and I stuff my ticket stub inside my purse. Something to remember our date with.

Passing through the oversized doors, he reaches for my hand. Without hesitation, I reciprocate. We still have a lot to learn about one another, one of those things being the forms of intimacy we find comfortable. Although we’d shared one of the most intimate nights I’ve ever experienced, we still didn’t know that side of each other well.

“So, what’d you think about the movie?”

“It was great. I don’t think I’ve watched something that’s made my palms sweat like that in a really long time. It was a definite rush,” I relay.

“I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was somewhat worried whether or not you’d like it.”

“You chose well. I’m sorry about your hand. I hope I didn’t break anything,” I say, a grimace morphing my face into some strange combination of eek and oops.

“You can stop with the face, although it’s kind of cute. As soon as I could feel my hand again, I discovered all is fine.”

Our fingers still laced together, I give a little squeeze to do my own check, seeing if everything is in place. Five fingers, their shape, and size all the way they should be. Perfect and warm.

“I didn’t think I’d be so freaked out in that kind of movie. That’s why I said nothing gory or sappy.”

“I guess you never know how it’ll go. It all depends on the movie and who wrote it, that’s what I say anyway.”

“I suppose you’re right. If we all knew what was going to happen, we wouldn’t pay to go see it.”

“Exactly.”
