CHAPTER 16
MAGDALENA
Initially, I told Geoff no romance or gruesome movies. I said no gore because I didnât want to be freaked out, basically jumping in his lap to be rescued. I said no romance for two reasons. Oneâromance is not always on a guyâs top favorites list. Twoâtoo much sappiness too soon could have one, or both, of us in some awkward state of how to proceed after the movie ends. So, we saw an action/suspense movie.
The better choice, right?
Wrong.
Donât get me wrong, the movie itself is good. I would watch it again. But some of the suspense plots had me so on edge. My heart pounding, knuckles white, my eyes glued to the screen. I wouldnât be surprised if, at some point, Iâd cut the circulation off in Geoffâs hand⦠more than once.
No matter how hard Iâd tried, I couldnât keep my composure. Just as the movie seemed to settle down, a new twist was thrown into the mix. By the end of the film, Iâm sure he was relieved to no longer feel my sweaty palms on his own and overjoyed to have blood flowing into all of his fingers.
The credits scroll up the screen as we head for the theater exit, and I stuff my ticket stub inside my purse. Something to remember our date with.
Passing through the oversized doors, he reaches for my hand. Without hesitation, I reciprocate. We still have a lot to learn about one another, one of those things being the forms of intimacy we find comfortable. Although weâd shared one of the most intimate nights Iâve ever experienced, we still didnât know that side of each other well.
âSo, whatâd you think about the movie?â
âIt was great. I donât think Iâve watched something thatâs made my palms sweat like that in a really long time. It was a definite rush,â I relay.
âIâm glad you enjoyed it. I was somewhat worried whether or not youâd like it.â
âYou chose well. Iâm sorry about your hand. I hope I didnât break anything,â I say, a grimace morphing my face into some strange combination of eek and oops.
âYou can stop with the face, although itâs kind of cute. As soon as I could feel my hand again, I discovered all is fine.â
Our fingers still laced together, I give a little squeeze to do my own check, seeing if everything is in place. Five fingers, their shape, and size all the way they should be. Perfect and warm.
âI didnât think Iâd be so freaked out in that kind of movie. Thatâs why I said nothing gory or sappy.â
âI guess you never know how itâll go. It all depends on the movie and who wrote it, thatâs what I say anyway.â
âI suppose youâre right. If we all knew what was going to happen, we wouldnât pay to go see it.â
âExactly.â
