Home at Last
Denver then traveled to India after being in Chungking. It had been two years since he signed into the army. “A proud cadet I was! Eager for experiences. Little did I dream of this, though,” he remarked in his diary. Denver then traveled through Pakistan before flying to Egypt. While in Egypt, he purchased some ivory, crossed over the Nile River on a bridge, observed the pyramids at Giza, and saw the famous Great Sphinx.
After his time in Egypt, Denver and some of the other Raiders traveled to Nigeria. There, they were delayed for a while, simply waiting for transportation. Denver remarked that a train he was on traveled through a dust storm, and he “ate dust” the whole trip. After this, they flew to Trinidad, where they happened to see the King of Greece.
Traveling around the world was interesting, but Denver longed to be home at last—back in his own country and his hometown of Lula, Georgia. He missed his family and was excited when, on June 10, 1942, the group of Raiders arrived in Miami, Florida.
