Chapter Seventeen
Dorothy held the notebook delicately in her hands, her green eyes scanning its worn cover. She opened it and flipped through a few pages, pausing when she saw Dr. Thorneâs familiar scrawl.
âWhat do you know?â she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The notebook seemed to shiver slightly in her hands, its pages rustling as if trying to gather its thoughts.
âIâm full of useful information!â it replied enthusiastically. âDid you know that Oakwood is built on sandstone bedrock? And back in the Paleozoic Era, this area used to be a sea! Imagine that, a sea right where youâre standing!â
Dorothy sighed, frustration bubbling beneath her calm exterior. âThatâs not really what I meant,â she said gently. âI need to know about the amulet.â
The notebook fell silent for a moment, as if it was considering how much it should reveal. Dorothy waited, her patience wearing thin, but understanding that coaxing information out of an enchanted object required finesse.
âWell,â the notebook began hesitantly, âDr. Thorne has been scribbling up a storm about the amulet. Sometimes she writes so hard it hurts.â
Dorothy raised an eyebrow. âHurts?â
âYes,â the notebook confirmed, sounding almost pained itself. âHer pen digs into my pages like sheâs trying to carve the information into stone. Sheâs very intense about it.â
Dorothy sighed inwardly. Dr. Thorneâs obsession with the amulet was well-known, but hearing it from the notebook added a new layer to her concern.
She leaned closer to the notebook, her curiosity piqued. "Show me," she requested softly.
The notebook obediently flipped open to a page filled with detailed sketches of the amulet. Dorothy traced a finger along the lines, impressed by Dr. Thorneâs meticulous artistry. Beneath the drawings, there were notes about the amuletâs protective properties, written in Dr. Thorneâs neat handwriting.
âThis amulet,â Dorothy read aloud, âis said to guard its keeper against all forms of harm, both physical and magical.â
Dorothy leaned closer to the notebook, her heart beating a bit faster as she absorbed the intricate details of the amulet. She needed to understand more about Dr. Thorne's obsession.
âWhy is she so fixated on this amulet?â Dorothy asked. âIs she planning to use it for herself?â
The notebook fluttered its pages as if taking a deep breath before responding. âIâm not entirely sure,â it admitted, its tone almost apologetic. âDr. Thorneâs thoughts are often scattered. She writes a lot about protection, but itâs hard to pin down exactly why sheâs so obsessed.â
Dorothy frowned, her mind racing with possibilities. âHas she mentioned anyone else in her notes? Anyone who might be in danger or need protection?â
The notebook paused again, its pages rustling softly. âThere are a few names here and there,â it said slowly, âbut they donât seem connected to any specific threat. Mostly, she writes about the amuletâs history and its previous keepers.â
Dorothyâs frown deepened. She needed more concrete information if she was going to make sense of this mystery. âCan you show me anything else about the amulet?â she asked, hoping for more clues.
The notebook obediently flipped to another page, revealing more sketches and notes about the amuletâs properties.
