When Brax woke up, he was hugging the bottle of Lag to his chest. Only an inch of warm liquid was hovering at the bottom of the bottle. He licked his cracked lips. Why had he woken up? His TV screen was black except for an oval floating around telling him that Sony was the proud sponsor of the current program.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

He jerked up into a sitting position, head aching, body screaming to lie back down again. Where was that pounding coming from? He clutched his head.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Brax! I know you’re fucking in there. Open up!” Rhett yelled.

“Fuck.” With the bottle still in hand, Brax staggered to the door and opened it.

Rhett was livid, the muscle in his jaw jumping. His breathing was hard. His eyes were his wolf’s.

And Brax was shit out of luck.

“Where the fuck have you been? You are supposed to be helping out with patrol duty. You are supposed to be part of this pack,” he ground out. Rhett’s mismatched glare found the bottle in his hand, his hands curling into fists. “You are supposed to be there for Indi, but all you’ve been doing is finding yourself at the bottom of a bottle.” Rhett’s wrist snapped, his hand flicking the bottle from Brax’s fingers. It crashed to the hardwood floor, splintering into a thousand pieces. It looked like ice, which only made Brax thirsty for another drink.

Rhett pushed into his apartment, stalking around, glowering at the fast food containers and the collection of empty whiskey bottles. “So, what do you have to say for yourself?”

Brax exhaled and turned to look at his best friend. Yeah, okay, so he was angry. But when Rhett had made the demands, Indi was still included in Brax’s list of duties.

“I…I need a drink.” Brax stumbled forward again, his legs sagging beneath him. He didn’t even make it a step before he fell. He was seeing stars. When he rolled over from kissing the rug, Rhett was looming over him. His best friend’s fist crashed into his jaw, sending more black stars erupting in Brax’s eyes. He rolled his face back to Rhett in time to watch his mismatched eyes morph into his wolf’s. Hauling him up by the hair, Rhett began beating him. He lost count of how many times his fists collided with his head, but it was well into the twenties by the time blood was first drawn.

Brax felt one eye swell up, blood trickling from a cut above it. His bottom lip burst open sending another fresh wave of warm blood spilling down his face and onto his bare chest. Rhett’s breathing was ragged—desperate—as he pounded into Brax’s face. His cheekbone shattered, his jaw dislocated, but Brax took it all. Rhett was going to kill him for touching his female and he had every right to.

Hot blood trickled into his mouth, filling it up until Brax had no choice but to swallow it down.

“Fight…back…damn…you,” Rhett grunted, his fists working Brax’s face relentlessly.

“No,” Brax croaked back, unable to see his best friend’s face anymore.
