Choices and Decisions

A force pressed at the edge of my consciousness and I curled deeper into the warm furs.

Little Queen. Ayan’s voice broke through the haze of sleep.

I shot up, and Tenebris tumbled from where he’d been curled up on my stomach.

Sinning dragon! He shot off up the stairs. I blinked and the iridescent walls of the sea shell came into view. Yawning, I stretched my arms over my head. I winced as my joints popped in protest, my body stiff from sleeping on the floor—I hadn’t been able to bring myself to sleep in the loft bed without Ryker, not after I’d abandoned him last night. Shame lit my face before Ayan’s voice drifted through my thoughts once more.

Come, Little Queen, you are needed.

Right. Struggling to my feet, I took in the crumbled status of last night's clothes that I’d slept in and promptly discarded them on the floor. I grabbed the top outfit from the clothes basket in the corner and slipped into the peach-colored top and tied the airy white sarong over my hip. The griffin charm Ryker had given me last night, brushed against my skin where it dangled below my throat, and I smiled.

I threaded my fingers through my matted straw-like silver hair, stiff from the dried sea salt from my midnight swim. My attention shifted to the brush still on the table from where Ryker had left it yesterday morning, and I groaned. That would take too long. Giving up on the hopeless task, I shoved my hair into a leather band from the clothes basket and called it quits.

I stumbled out the door. The pink hue of dawn tinted the beach, the fresh morning breeze rifling through my uncombed hair. I inhaled the salt tainted air and glanced down the beach. Ayan waited at the edge of the shore, her wings outstretched on the sand, while her vivid green eyes watched me.

She was magnificent. Jogging closer, I realized she wasn’t alone. Harper turned at my approach, but no smile graced her features this morning, and my gut twisted into knots.

“What’s wrong?” I slowed to a stop before them, glancing between the chief and the dragon.

Ayan dipped her head, while Harper pursed her lips.

“It’s your mother.” Harper crossed her arms.

Bile rose in the back of my throat. “Did she attack again?” I choked.

Harper shook her head.

No, but she gathers her forces, and I fear she knows that you are here. The disturbance my people felt yesterday was her armies flooding the Emperial village Lunara just beyond the shore.

I shuddered, fear clawing at my insides. “So soon? I-I’m not ready to face her yet—”

Peace, Ayan whispered through my mind. She cannot reach you here, under the protection of the dragons. She knows that, and she has not come herself. But you must prepare, Little Queen; your time approaches.

No, no, no. This couldn’t be happening. The demon stirred within me. Cassie’s face rose in my mind, her red eyes staring as her lips curled into a sneer.
