Chapter 16
Eliza Compton had studied magical medicine for many years before she became a practicing physician. She continued to add to her knowledge as often as she could, making a point to learn where traditional medicine and magical medicine might meet and potentially be used together.
Elizaâs family was âmixedâ in that she had both magical and non-magical family members in her direct family. Her father was very much non-magical, though he was an eminent physician in his field of medicine, epidemiology. Elizaâs father had travelled the world studying infectious diseases right up until his deathâfrom a heart attack, not one of his test subjectsâand heâd passed on his love of medicine to his daughter.
Elizaâs mother was a house-witch, content to raise her children and keep her home and husband happy. Eliza felt no draw to be a wife or mother, but she knew she wanted to be a doctor since as long as she could remember. After many years of magical medical school and several decades of practice, she still got a thrill when making a house call outside of her familiar magical communities.
Stepping off the express train from Manhattan to Kensleigh Landing East, Eliza found herself on the corner of a busy highway. She always forgot how bustling these semi-rural highways could be, especially near the large shopping centers. Surveying her surroundings, Eliza quickly ascertained that she had exited at the wrong stop. She should have wound up at the train tracks near the library, not the ones near the shopping mall.
She pulled a piece of paper from her purse and muttered a few words over it. A map of the area appeared, along with a glowing dot that indicated her destination. Another glowing dot appeared a few miles away. She was the second dot, and from the look of the map, she had quite a bit of walking to do. She wondered if it would be too much of an imposition to call Seneca and ask her to come and pick her up.
She also considered finding an object large enough to enchant and simply fly to Senecaâs house, but that would involve using an invisibility potion and she had neglected to bring any of that. Eliza felt herself getting flustered, which would do her no good. Spotting a bus stop nearby, she decided to go there and call Seneca. She could wait in comfort on the bench at the bus stop instead of standing on the sidewalk like a loon.
Eliza opened her purse and began digging around inside for her phone. She had been in a hurry when she left her house and had simply tossed it into her enchanted bag, along with several vials of anti-flu, a couple of crossword puzzle books, and her spare clothing. She had just put her hand on the phone when a woman sat down beside her on the bench.
The woman looked awful and smelled even worse. Her clothing, which looked to have been expensive at some point in time, now looked like it had been lived in for days, maybe even weeks.
