Koshmarnyk, Irtan, and Varessa answered Kamira’s summons quicker than she’d expected. She hardly had time to lodge Myrkan’s brooch under the dwindling pile of crystal pieces that used to be her prison. It made for a poor hiding place, but with all the energy surrounding the shards, it was the best spot to hide any demonic magic emanating from the piece of jewelry. If she was lucky, Irtan wouldn’t notice anything, because the last thing she needed was a lengthy explanation of Myrkan’s attempt to sway her.

Koshmarnyk and Irtan walked shoulder to shoulder, and from what Kamira could gather from the tone of their conversation carried within the chamber, they were engaged in an amicable exchange. Varessa followed, and her frown made it clear she didn’t appreciate being dragged away from whatever duties she’d assigned herself. No wonder this woman hadn’t been quick to ascend in the Towers’ old power structures.

“I have a reason to believe that our enemies will mount a powerful attack soon,” Kamira said. “We will need all the forces we can muster at the walls. As soon as we’re done here, we’ll send word to Gildya, and to the city council as well.”

“I’ve already sent anyone I could to defend the city.” Varessa didn’t hide her displeasure. “The ones that are left don’t have enough of a grasp on the arts to be of use as arcanists.”

“But they can still be of help,” Kamira replied. “Defenders will need all kind of assistance. Our students can aid the medics, carry messages, or even bring water and food.” She looked Varessa in the eye. “I know you care about them, but I’ve seen girls and boys much younger than them doing their part at the walls, and I won’t have anyone say that, in the time of greatest need, arcanists hid in the Towers.”

Varessa curled her lips in a grimace, but in the end, she nodded. “I’ll lead them myself and ensure they are assigned to posts befitting their skills.”

Undoubtedly, the stubborn archmage would do everything to keep her students out of harm’s way, but Kamira couldn’t oversee everything anyway. As long as arcanists were seen at the walls, as long as there were no grounds to claim that they didn’t do everything in their power, she would let Varessa have her way. At least those who were trained and picked by Irtan were already at the walls, and from what Kamira had seen, they were doing better than anyone would have expected them to, given they’d only received a few weeks of schooling.

Irtan looked up toward the dome. “Fyertash?”

“Already headed to the walls,” Kamira replied. “I’ll need you to stay here.”

The old man shook his head. “I hope you aren’t concerned with my age, my dear,” he said jovially, though his expression made it clear he would not concede. “This was my city long before it became yours, and you would be a fool to leave the second most skilled arcanist behind. Besides, I wouldn’t let you take all the glory for yourself,” he added jokingly.
