Fifteen

The living room is quiet. I sit on one of Master Fabian’s fancy armchairs, staring into the fireplace, replaying my latest discovery over and over in my head.

I’m half-witch. Until meeting Christine Young, I never thought such a thing was possible. But I shouldn’t be too surprised.

Logistically speaking, warlocks and witches are the most similar to ordinary humans when compared to other lesser demon races. If any of them could reproduce with humans, it’d be them.

Not to mention, lesser demons came into existence via demon and human… interactions. Of course it’s possible demons can reproduce with humans. I just never thought one would reproduce with a Guardian. Let alone, my mom…

I hear a hallway door open and close. Footsteps approach. After Master Fabian’s big reveal, I’d excused myself to wrap my head around the news. I didn’t want to freak out in front of the grandfather I just met—the grandfather who I hadn’t even known existed.

Whenever I’d asked my mom about my dad, she’d always just said his job kept him from being with us, but that he loved me very much. Now, I’m wondering how much of that was true.

I’m not surprised to see Belial step out of the hallway. Concern fills his gaze. His eyes run over me. “Are you all right?”

Of course not.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I could not.” His eyes plead with me to understand. And I do.

He couldn’t tell me my father’s identity because of whatever power lingers in the blood vow he made with my mom. The only way I could’ve learned the truth was for someone else to tell me…

I close my eyes. I don’t even have the energy to be upset. “Is this why we really came to Blackstone? So I could learn I’m half-witch?”

“No.” I hear Belial walk farther into the room. The chair in front of me creaks as he sits. “I truly brought you here to have the block removed from your mind.”

I crack an eye open. He looks sincere.

I sigh. “So, Master Fabian is the warlock who put the block there?”

With regret, Belial shakes his head.

He doesn’t even need to explain. “My father, then.”

“Yes.”

“Well, I guess that means he knows I exist.” But it doesn’t explain why he’s been absent my entire life.

Belial leans back, watching me warily. If he thinks I’m going to try and make a break for it, he should give me more credit. We’re in a clan’s secret, magical hideout. It’s not like I can run out of here and easily make an escape. He’d just find me, anyway.

“So, are you able to tell me his name? Or did my mom make you promise to keep that from me as well?” I don’t mean the words to come out as harsh as they sound, but I don’t bother to take them back.

“Antonio.”

“Antonio?”

He nods.

“Is he Italian?”

“I believe his ancestors were, yes.”

“Huh.” I never wondered where I got my dark hair and green eyes from. Mom was blonde and had blue eyes, but it wasn’t something I thought about as a kid.
