Shaun put the stake down. He found Sarah in her room, an arsenal on her bed. She looked up, her hand still reaching for something under the bed.

“I was sure there was a tomahawk under here somewhere.”

There was more creepy weird stuff on the duvet than he cared to think about. The painful looking whip of chains with the razor sharp tips wasn’t something he thought he’d even seen before.

“What the fuck is... no, I really don’t want to know. I had no idea you had all this crap.” Well, he suspected she had some of it. She always got excited when she heard about nasty old torture devices. He could always hear the gears revving in her brain when she found out about something that she might be able to use. He was glad they mostly wound up stashed away under that trap door under her bed though. The sword was a hell of a lot less disturbing.

“Here it is.” She got up and put the sharp axe down. “Is that all? Thought there was more.” She fingered the crossbow. “I really should get out and practice with some of this.”

“You need to hide the stuff Mum might freak over.” He had no idea just looking what stuff would be acceptable and what wouldn’t.

Sarah sighed and folded her arms. “I think she’ll be more bothered by the blessed stakes. If you’ve got any holy water left, she might take that too.”

“How ‘bout that?” He pointed to a dusty wooden crucifix. “What exactly is that?”

She picked it up and pulled the top point away from the rest of the cross. It was the handle of a dagger with a rusted blade. “Good for sending demons back to hell. She might try to take it.”

She pushed the blade back into its sheath. Her eyes went over everything else.

“Have you ever even used any of this stuff?”

“I want to get the chance.”

“Where are the stakes?”

She opened a wooden box. “They’ll be safe in here.” Meaning she wouldn’t be able to sniff them out. He could tell the box had magical properties once it was open, before that he never would have looked at it twice.

There were more than he’d thought. His stomach turned. “Are we so sure we should be keeping them hidden?”

She glared at him. “Don’t you even dare, Shaun. You know...”

He took one stake out of the box. “She’ll expect to find something.”

“Oh. Right.” She tossed another two out of the box and managed to fit the crucifix blade inside. The box shut, and she turned the catch. “Good call, brainiac.”

“Are we sure Ben won’t go psycho?”

She smiled. “The vampire hasn’t killed anyone. He’s got no reason to go psycho.”

“Besides being locked in our basement for six months?”

“He’s still the same guy.”

“Is he?”

“I’ve spoken to him,” she said, avoiding the utter disbelief her words stirred by directing her attention to clearing her weapons stash back away under her bed.

“What do you mean, you’ve spoken to him?”

“Pass me the mace, would you?”

He grabbed the handle.
