Behind the Veil

Three years ago...

The demon noticed that the appendages sprouting from its hands were starting to look less like claws and more like human fingers. A rare smile spread from one pointed ear to the other.

Improvement.

A harpy soared in the crimson sky, blocking the sickly yellow starlight before sensing danger and moving on. Once upon a time, a harpy would have considered the young demon fair game. But the power framework was shifting now. Unlike some of the low-tier creatures, demons possessed the ability to evolve and grow, increasing their power, altering their appearance, and elevating their intellect.

A hierarchy existed here which had consigned the young demon to the vilest dregs of the absolute worst real estate this side of the Veil. But that was about to change. This demon had plans. This demon was going places. Someday, it would take its rightful place among the Exalted Ones. But there was much work to be done before then.

First fingers, then perhaps it could manifest something above the neck that looked more like a human head than a nest of writhing black centipedes. Thanks to a monstrous dose of ruthless determination, plus some reciprocal dealmaking on both sides of the Veil, the demon’s evolution raced along a fast track.
