Chapter 14

“I thought we could try a different restaurant,” David said. “This little Greek place just opened, and I thought it might be good.”

He parked the car and they got out, holding hands as they walked into the restaurant. The aroma of roast lamb immediately hit Angela, making her mouth water.

“Have you had Greek food before?” David asked, smiling down at her.

“Yes,” Angela said. “Caroline took me to a Greek place in D.C. one time when I visited her. It was fantastic.”

David let out a sigh of relief. “I’m glad to hear it. I was worried you might think it was too exotic.”

“Not at all. I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to food. My mom taught me well.”

David chuckled. “How is Abigail doing?”

Angela’s face fell a bit. “She... had a bit of a forgetful spell the other day. It scared Carol.”

“I’m so sorry. Are they both all right?”

“Yeah,” Angela said. “She’s been staying away because she’s scared to watch our mom battling dementia. She wants to fix it, but feels like she can’t. I’m glad she finally said what was bothering her.”

“That’s understandable,” David replied. “It must be hard to watch a loved one go through that.”

“It is,” Angela agreed. “But I think Carol is starting to see the value in sticking together to help mom. She’s helping me a bit on this case, too.”

“Really?” he asked, raising his eyebrows questioningly, but the hostess came over at that moment to show them to a table. After they settled into their seats and ordered their drinks, he took her hand.

“So, what is Caroline doing on the case?”

“She has contacts at the EPA. She’s going to get in touch and see if ProFarm has had any violations.”

“I take it they’re reluctant to talk about any indiscretions?” David chuckled.

“Very,” Angela agreed. “It’s frustrating us to no end.”

“So, take me through the case from the beginning to now,” David requested. “I feel like I haven’t properly talked to you in a while, and I’ve only heard snippets about what’s going on in the news and from Michelle.”

Angela explained the odd connection between Caroline’s case and her case with the death of Susan Karp, the mysterious circumstances surrounding Dennis Karp’s death, and the explosion, as well as her theory that they were all somehow connected. Her explanation was punctuated here and there with questions or exclamations from David.

“This is one crazy case,” he said, shaking his head. “It seems like too many coincidences to be real, but you’re right that it’s the only thing that makes sense. It must all be connected, starting back with Dennis’s death.”

Their food arrived just as she finished talking about the meeting with Jamie Towers. David wore a thoughtful expression as he chewed.

“What I don’t get,” he said suddenly, “is why they would pass up Dennis for the head of R and D. He seems to have had the most seniority.”

“According to some of the scientists, Dennis sometimes took risks to protect others,” Angela replied. “Maybe they saw him as a liability.
