SUPERORDINATE GOAL ► a goal common to groups who are in conflict over the pursuit of less important goals.

Latané and Darley (1979) proposed a decision model of bystander intervention that explained the processes that caused this lack of intervention and the barriers that needed to be overcome before an individual would intervene and help someone.

Psychologists such as Daniel Batson (1943–present) have emphasised the empathy altruism – when we see someone in trouble our empathy is aroused and we help. In contrast, the negative state relief model – observing someone in trouble – makes us feel uncomfortable and we decide to help in order to get rid of this unpleasant feeling.

NEGATIVE STATE RELIEF MODEL ► seeing someone in trouble makes us uncomfortable, so we intervene to remove this feeling.
